While some do and others dont. I am one of the ones who do believe in them, not all of them but a few of the popular ones, what is your opinions about oil additives or gasoline additives?
I wont mention any name brands so as to not be considered SPAM, but I do have a favorite and it is in all of my vehicles.
Also, what is the opinion of the engine treatment called (sorry) seafoam. I hope I have not oversteped my bounds here with these questions, I do not work for any of these types of companys. I actually make Fence equipment. Thanks for any input.
I feel that Seafoam does some good, I don't know how it works, but I use It to smooth out all my engines. It is good on lawnmowers, (all small engines)
and all my gasoline powered car and truck engines.
I only use seafoam on my intake manifolds, carbs, and throttle bodies. I do not add it to oil or gas.
I've used the above mentioned engine treatment with very good results. Added thru a vacuum hose to the intake plenum.
I've used "Techron" and "Lucas" gasoline additive into the tank with good results too. The Lucas seemed to work a little better (maybe different conditions).
I wonder about the oil additives. Never tried any of them.
those oil additives did not show any results for me. I really feel like I wasted 10 bucks. I figured hey, for the price, something should happen. It didn't change anything. I think I used grease lightining or something like that... Anyway, unless your engine is a giant cracked gasket, I don't see oil additives helping anyone. I think it's the type of product for the non-mechanic trying to keep his vehicle on it's last leg.
Thanks for the replies so far. I see opinions from both sides, I used some seafoam on my Saturn and it ran like a different car. I just was wondering if I was out of my mind or something.
Years ago I put Slick50 into my wifes new Caravan. Not long after she hit something and put a nickel sized hole iin the botom of the oil pan. She did not bother to look for damage, she just drove 20 miles home to tell me she hit something. There was no oil left in the pan. I JB Weled it, refilled it and she drove it another 7 years before we traded it in. I don't swear by the stuff but to me, it did work.
I've had a product called Restore work well for my 74 Ford Capri but I feel modern engines don't respond as well.
I too use Seafoam in the intake and occasionally in the oil 500 mile before an doing an oil change. I have not tried it in the gas yet.
I am glad to know that others have what they feel is confirmed proof of some of these products. Like I posted, I used Seafoam in a car with over 170,000 miles on it and this was a car I drove everyday to work on the same road, same hills and same stops.
I did the triple treatment like recommended on the can and followed the directions and the engine just runs better. It takes on hills now in 4th that I had to downshift to 3rd before. It even spun out the tire on a spot I stop everyday.
Gas mileage went up just under 2 MPG for the last 3 tanks now, I get 34.5 MPG out of this old car every tank. I use Lucas oil treatment in the Ford as it is just another product I have had good results with. I used a product called "High Tach" before Lucas came out and thought it was a good product. Thanks for responding, I am very happy to hear that others consider them a good product as well.
I use Slick 50 in the oil at every change and have forever. Seafoam gave me over a 1mpg bump in the 460 and I also use it in the gas tank. Use Tow-Cool in the F250 for the summer months pulling the gooseneck with great results, added a trans cooler as well a long time ago. Right now we have a '99 Denali (wife's vehicle), '94F250 w/253,500 miles, '96 Bronco w/ 156,700 miles, and a 2002 F150 company maintained truck. Project Bronco will have the engine(460)/trans (E4od)/t-case/axles from an F250 when done and I will use the Slick 50 and Seafoam in it as well.
I have been using Seafoam for years and decades. I did put it in the oil once when a truck was llllloooooonnnnnnngggggg overdue for an oil change and it did clean things up some. Like with another product, I did change the oil filter, drove the truck around with the Seafoam and old oil,(few hundred miles) drained the oil and changed the filter again.
Have personally never used oil additives as a matter of routine.
SeaFoam is what I use. I let 2/3 get sucked into the intake and put the rest in the gas. It does its job. My favorite part is when you start the engine after and the white smoke comes out of exhaust lol.
