I am wanting to get a diffrent tone. I have a 3.0 with the exaust going into a one in two out Flomaster with echo tip turndowns. What would happen if i do decide to punch the Cat? Will it mess up the engine? Or do any other major damage? Thanx
If I punched my cat, he would probably pee on my bed for revenge.
But in all seriousness, I had removed what was left of the exhaust on mine, from the Y pipe on back, so I could replace the modulator. I only put the catalytic converter back on so I could get it to the muffler shop. It sounded like straight pipes. Plain loud (and offensive) to me. I don't know if altering yours would make any difference in the sound or not. It also may affect the emissions on your vehicle, and cause you to violate the law, in regards to modifying certain parts of the exhaust.
I almost bet you $5 that your truck will sound much better and a little louder if you cut off the tail pipe and just run without them. I did that and it sounds awesome and isn't too loud but loud enough to hear it when excellerating and at lower speeds, it fades away on the highway which is perfect cause that humm that you get on cars where theres only one cat and a cut off tailpipe gets annoying.
Gutting that cat will set off a CEL on ODB-II systems, you may fail emissons depending on your location, it WILL hurt performance and you will be fined $$$ by the government if they find out.
Punching the cat worked wonders for those GM cats of the 80's. Modern cats don't really restrict flow to a noticable degree. I second the idea about the tip cut off.
