called up the gf on her way home from work and had her pick it up. had to get it from the stealer, but the parts guy hooked me up on the price and threw in the hoses just in case. it's on, and i drove it about 25 miles (into town and back). the CEL didn't come back on, so i guess it's fixed. super sweet!!
My Ranger (2001 4.0 4x4) just experienced this today. I pulled the code when the CEL went on, and re-set it, but something rang a bell in the back of my mind.
When I bought the vehicle (used, 2003) I asked the dealer to do a Oasis search (Ford vehicle history search) on my truck. There on the printout was the following under the Outstanding Field Service Actions -
"02M01 - Caution: May not need repair; service only if concern is present. Please refer to dealer letter for program coverage. Tube-Mounted EGR pressure sensor - Additional coverage of 2 years or 24,000 miles, which ever occurs first, to the base warranty."
My local dealer is pretty good about helping me out, and I'm going to see if maybe that can get it through under warranty. They did service the slip yoke for me at approx 49,000 (well over the warranty period), and did it for free.
well, i thought it was all good, but then i proceeded to drive about 90 miles to see my dad. the dadblamed thing came on again. at this point i'm guessing it's the EGR or the hoses are plugged. any ideas?
Sometimes those hoses just...well....fall off. Have had that happen on a Topaz (ok, so it isn't a Ranger, but the setup is the same). And don't forget, check those hoses for cracks or holes. I want to point out too that, maybe someone else experienced this as well, but what about the O2 sensor? My '94 went through the throwing all kinds of codes and CELs for a long time, mostly that derned EGR code. Dad's x-mas prezzie: Dealer Repair. New O2 sensor, fuel filter, fuel pump, and $600 later I never got another CEL. But, this is also keeping in mind that although my fuel ecenomy was not suffering I did get an occasional idle fluctuation (drop way down then skyrocket then level back out) when sitting at a red light. (The '94 was a 5-speed, this may not apply or be an issue if yours is an auto.) Hope some of this can point you in the right direction...
naw... the O2 sensors throw obvious codes on mine. i'm having a weird issue where the crankcase vent. hose (from the air outlet to the oil neck filler pipe) won't stay connected... maybe that's it. in any case, i'm replacing the EGR next...

Did you check the codes again to make sure it's still the P0401 you're getting?
yeah... P0401 is the only code i'm getting... don't know. on the EGR, what type of RTV should i use? i'm pretty sure i can do this in a day if i ever get one where it doesn't rain...
i discovered problem #2: how the heck do i get the connector on the EGR tube to turn? i tried it with a crescent wrench; it's starting to round off. is there another way to do this, or did i finally screw it up?
Heat will be the only way... sometimes they break no matter what you do. If your egr is clogged up it's probably in the intake not in that tube though, as the ports are much smaller.
I'm still leaning towards the DPFE sensor though, did you use a ford part? Are you sure you used new hoses? sometimes they deteriorate and pieces of rubber get lodged up in the DPFE sensor. It could also be a plugged converter... rare, but possible.
Ford has revised that part a few times, I would go to the dealer and make sure it's the latest revision (and motorcraft).
If your DPFE sensor has a metal housing, then it's the old one. The new ones have a plastic housing.
yep... used the new plastic motorcraft part... i won't mess with the stealership around here because it's a military town and they charge exorbitant rates. the dealership back home says that that P0401 code is specific to the DPFE sensor... so they said they will take a look around, replace everything that needs replacing, and check it again for $150 total. (the benefits of being military and living in a small town--everyone respects you). thanks for the advice!
