I have no idea how this happened. Looks like the bosses on the transmission just disintegrated, and after I got the bracket out I was able to pull away the aluminum surrounding the bolts by hand. I plan on either drilling and tapping out what's left of the bosses in the transmission and making a couple of aluminum spacers, or having something fabricated that connects to the transmission pan.
F250 broken shift braket at the tranny mounting studs
I have a 2002 F250 with 61k miles and I have the same problem as this post. There is not enough metal remaining to retap. My mechanic is trying to come up with a bracket that will be attached to the tranny oil pan. I'm supprised that Ford has not provided a solution. This should be considered a safety issue. Mine broke while driving and could not shift into any gear. Rest of the under body is rusting away as well
I'm sorry to hear you had the same problem. Let me know how you make out with the adapter for the pan, I think that's the way to go.
As far as the rest of the undercarriage rotting, same here. 110K miles and I had a brake line rot through while driving, the infamous Triton rotted exhaust bolts which is also plaguing my '03 Town Car now, rotted bolts and rust everywhere, and the broken trans shifter bracket.
Between the F350 and Town Car falling apart, I've given up on Ford, and just bought myself an '09 Mercedes ML550. It's got tons of power, tows like a mule (relatively) with a 7200lb tow rating, and rides like a dream. And Mercedes gave me a bumper to bumper warranty for another 3 years, up to 135K miles, which Ford would NEVER do since they are rust buckets long before then.
I will probably still keep the F350 as a work truck, but it's been laid up for over a year now with all these problems and I've lost my desire to keep fixing it only to find more rotted parts.
Love to get a Mercedes but its not practicle being that I need to plow in CT & RI. Items replaced to date are exhaust manifolds both sides twice, power steering lines, brake lines, AC lines, tranny oil lines, tranny oil pan, both differential covers, radiator due to rust at tranny cooling line, oil dip stick tube twice, oil dip stick once. It must be the crap that they use on the roads for snow removal?
I agree. The ML can't be my only truck either. I don't plow, but I do pull some heavy loads that this thing just can't handle.
To be honest, it's my wife's. It was actually about the same as what I paid for my '00 F350 when I got it new. The deal was, I'll get you the ML, but you gotta let me tow my bass boat when I need it.
