Must be getting hot around here in PHX. My tranny normally sits at about 150 degrees but the last 3 days it has been up to 165. I have a larger tranny pan and TRU_COOL Max. So I was just wondering what the stock guys are seeing in their tranny temps, especially those who's ambient temps are in the triple digits
I'd say with your setup the temps should be between 60-80 degrees above ambient even when running unloaded. Mine are running high right now but my tranny is on it's last legs (temps running 180+ unloaded with ambient in the 90's).
As long as you are under the 200F mark, you're A-ok.
Tranny fluid has an optimal operation range,, just like engine oil. Too hot and it burns up and lubricates poorly, too cold and it will not provide as good of lubrication.
This is why your tranny fluid is routed through the engine radiator, the radiator helps to warm it up in the winter and cool it in the summer.
Two days ago I hauled a 8000 lb enclosed trailer about 300 mi loaded in 95F heat, and the warmest my tranny fluid ever got was 165F and that was on the bone stock tranny system.
You are running fine. You can switch to synthetic which can handle 250 deg before break down. 225 deg is considered Red. I did a flush and added the Sonnax/tricumulator kit on my tranny at the 100K miles and now with 210K it still runs like new. Quick and firm shifts. I flush my system every 30K miles. I also added an external Motorcarft micro filter filter. Let u know if you need any of the stuff.
In Havasu, I run my PSD truck stop and go, up and down small hills and some highway miles all day, and I have been seeing 160 to 170, but it takes a while to get there. I have Mobil 1 Syn, PML Auminum tranny pan and fan assisted cooler. Temps today were around 116.
