Ultimate RC ?

Not sure how this thing works. Maybe the engine is hooked up to servos. Dial-up warning - video.

Edit: Here's the guys website. This isn't the helicopter video.

near as i can tell, he's got a small nitro engine on it with the servos hooked tothe trailing edge. probably set up like a flying wing with "elevons" its basically a RC plane with a boat for a body. when he was in the water, there is no prop, so its working on airboat principles. (hence land and street "flight" too). i've seen similars ideas witha flat piece of corrugated plastic, a motor and a couple servos. pretty slick n cheap setups that fly well. good piloting on the flyers part too.

the hobby shop would be the best place to start. i know theres lots of websites that have RC equipment as well. www.towerhobbies.com is a good one. those "boat planes" might have been custom made (a couple guys goofin around with some free time), but you can ask at the hobby shop of they know where you can get one, or at least the parts to make on yourself. just takes a lil thought.

They almost don't seem to fly. More like they get tugged around by the engine, always in kind of a power-on stall. Strange. Looks hard to control.

No way. Sorry to be a skeptic, but I can not believe that is real video. It would take some major speed to keep that body shape in the air. It would need a lot of lift to get that compact shape moving in the air, and to keep it aloft. If you watch closely you can see the bodies leaning down some in the rear and they appear to rock back and forth as they turn. If it was moving as fast as it would need to I seriously doubt that you would see the bodies rock side to side because they would be moving forward so much faster. Now, if I could see it in person and be proved wrong I would eat my hat and buy that person that built a real working boat/plane lunch.

If it is fake, I give the videographer and editor major props, because it all fits so seamlessly and smoothly. (It reminds me of all those sport drink commercials with the video tricks. Like the tennis match on the clay court and the ball gets hit so hard to the other side of the court that it gets lodged halfway into the ground. That was impressive video manipulation.)

It is entirely possible. All you would need to do is make the body of the boad an aerofoil. You know shaped like a plane wing. Then the two hulls would act as stabilizers in the air. You could steer it easily enough by "wing warping"...

its real. listen to the body scrape on the asphalt when it goes by. the ripples on the water. i've seen people build model LAWNMOWERS and fly them. just takes simple aerodynamics. it was rocking because its not a very staable flight surface because its just simple not very wide. its like trying to ride a bycle without training wheels. the wider something is, the more stable (somewhat, depends on the speed). but is entirely possible, probably made of foam, some light balsa and a fiberglass bottom part of the hull. they probably steer with the elevons. two flaps ont he back of the boat that move up n down with or against each other. with toda's modern RC radios, its pretty easy. i have a foam plane i can fly outback of the 5 acres. granted, looks like a plane, but same concept.

Allright there Orville.....wing warping would be difficult to accomplish when it's made of such rigid foam. Impossible. I maintain that they are not truly flying, just kind of being drug around by the engines. There were points where any airfoil would have stalled, but the "planes" remained aloft.

The Hydro-Foam is a remote control electric airplane powered by a brushless motor and lithium-polymer batteries. It's not a beginner airplane.

We are working on getting the Hydro-Foam kits ready for production, but there is no pre-order list. They should be available world wide in the near future. We are not planning on making plans available at this time... sorry. I don't have a price yet or a hard time frame, but we are working as fast as we can. The Miss Fanfold plans may be available at a later date, but I am much too busy at this time to even think about it. Please check back here often for details on availability.

I've seen the video of the flying lawnmowers!!! Incredible.

I want one of the flying boats!!!!!!!

I just gotta figure a way to put a BB gun on it. I'll be able to take care of the dog(s) that keep leaving their 'samples' in my side yard.
Pffffffft!

Doh!!!!!!!!

Yep. But there is also discussion there concerning parallel designers working on their own versions of it.

It looks like a hollow-foam structure with a thin bonding coat on the outer surfaces. The apparent spoiler on the rear is evidently a twin rudder and elevator, the CG must be a critical factor in the roll characteristics. There's nothing there that could be used for ailerons...
