Flat towing question.

I just purchased a tow bar to to our toy (Suzuki Samuri) to the Bloomsburg, PA 4X4 nationals. I have always towed using a trailer before and was wondering if I need to secure the steering wheel in the towed vehicle or let it free. Does anyone else flat tow a second vehicle? I know I have to disconnect the rear drive shaft but I am unsure about the steering wheel. I am towing with an 03 F-250 V-10.

Leave the steering wheel unlocked so the wheels can turn and it will follow your tow vehicle nicely......unless you try to back up!

"A. The steering on a towed car should always be unlocked while towing. The key should be in the unlocked position in your ignition. On most vehicles the unlocked position is one "click" ahead of the lock position. On some cars this is also the accessory position so you may have to make sure all your accessories, such as your radio and heater fan, are turned off while you are towing. "

The above is an excerpt from http://www.towingworld.com/faqs.html. Hope this helps.

why the drive shaft disconnect? Doesn't the Samari have a neutral position in the transfer case?

Yes it does, I was going to ask the same thing, we have a new Suzuki 7 pass and it can be flat towed without anything but nuetral in the transfer case. The Samarai has been flat towed all over the world, heck, I'm doing it right now,,,,

OK I'll just slip the transfer case into neutral and roll with it. Thanks for the tips.

We're here to help, good luck, enjoy the jamboree and don't roll that Samarai over. Are you rock crawling ? That is just fascinating to watch, I want to go to a live event. Except we have to wait until we get 2 days of sun in a row here in the Pacific Northwest, and that may not happen.
