Question Towing V8 Gas VS V10 Gas 3.73 Axle ratio VS 4.10 Axle ratio

I am looking at buying a 2008 F250 but am confused on engines and axle ratio's.
I will be towing a 5th wheel camper.
What will be the best as far as towing and espescially gas mileage these days, a V8 with 4.10 Axle Ration which I guess will tow 11,800 pounds or a V10 with a 4.10 Axle ratio which will pull 14,700.
I will be towing a max of 10,800 pounds fully loaded trailer.
If I get the over kill on the engine will my mileage be as good or better than the V8, is it worth the extra bigger engine?

Moved to the proper forum. Your question is not about the 2009 F150 and does not apply to that section.

Go for the V10 with the 4.10 ratio, you'll love it. The V10 is only a $600 option. You will get about the same mileage as a V8 and it will tow better. You never know when your going to upgrade to a bigger trailer.

Thank you for your input. Can you tell me what i can expect for gas mileage with the V10 , towing and non towing. I generally stay at 60 mph or less.

With my V10 and the 3.73 gears I get around 14 MPG on the highway at 70 MPH and around 9.5-11 MPG towing around 11K lbs.

My V10 with 4.30 gears is averaging about 9-10 mpg's overall. Better on the highways of course. But plenty of power and torque.

Well I'm towing 8000 pounds with the V10/4.10 and I would strongly suggest getting the 4.30 gear option. Solo expect around 13mpg hwy 10-11 city. Towing I'd guess 6-9 mpg depending if you have hilly country.

Yep, V10 and 4.30 ratio averaging 10+ without highway driving, 12.5+ on the interstate. This is all without towing.

Go V10 and 4.30. V8 is too small and will get worse mileage than V10 while towing. You will be stomping on the go pedal all the time.

I have 3.73's and with bigger tires it's more like 3.58's. I wish I had 4.30's. You may lose 1mpg while driving empty, but the truck will be livelier than with the 4.11's It certainly will tow better.

Have you been able to FIND a V10 on the lot?

I've had a hard time finding one too. They are all Powerstrokes around here.

caleb, if you want to buy a V10 SD off the lot you can check inventory of dealers anywhere in the U.S. on fords site. V10's of anykind are hard to find on the lot. I was lucky enough to have a dealer near me who had a couple in stock. You may just have to order one.

Go with the 4.30s and the V10 I had a 5.8 with 4.10s and when I got my new truck it was night and different pulling it was like a 300 six to my V10. The new 3 valve motor and tranny and towcommand the brake control are very great to tow with Ford has a good system. Go with it.The $600.00 option is well worth it.

Do you know if there is a big differance in gas mileage between the 4.10 and the 4.30?
