7 Miles per Gallon

Hello guys... I have a 2WD F- 250 with a 4.9 EFI 6 in line.
What can I do to get better gas mileage? What's wrong with my truck?... Should I be getting more mileage or is this okay? I've always gotten the same amount of miles per gallon.
Propane distribution is getting political involvement in Ecuador and are not selling any to vehicles... I have to use gasoline again at $2.20 USD per gallon VS $1.80 per propane tank that gave me 30 miles per tank!
Thanks for any advices.

So you're only getting 9 miles to the gallon when running on gasoline? Do you have a check engine light. Many things could be causing this. My problem was a plugged up cat. Took it off and my mileage went from 9-10 to almost 14, 15 on a good day. If you have an engine light, pull the codes and see what the computer is telling you. Also you might want to check the fuel pressure. If your engine runs real weak and has no power and the exhaust smells rich, chances are you could have a bad fuel pressure regulator. On an inline I believe you should be pulling 50 PSI (correct me anyone if I'm wrong.) You can pull the vaccuum line off the FPR and see if theres any fuel in it. If there is, you have a bad regulator. Also you cant forget a simple tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and filters are a must. Hope this gives you a few places to start. Good day sir.

Thanks for the heads up... Fuel pressure is good... it's about 60 or 80 (something like that) Mechanic said it was okay. About the spark plugs and wires... do I have to change the wires even if they are good... (they are old but have a good condition to the eye)... Same question for the cap and rotor.
On the other hand, My mechanic can't find a problem it has now, no power at all, if I press the gas at full it dies, but if I do it little by little it accelerates little by little but no power either. (no codes) check engine on!
Sensors are good, computer is good. Injectors are clean. Mechanic says we'll try different injectors in the morning to see if they are sending too much fuel. What do you think?

Thanks a lot!
Might sound stupid but what's a plugged cat?

There are 2 cats in the exhaust system, before the muffler.

Plugged means your cat isnt functioning properly anymore and it is causing tremendous backpressure.

If you have used Leaded gasoline, it will mess it up. I dont know if propane will do the same. The only way to know if its plugged up is to remove the cat.

Also, while in park, rev the engine up. Now look at the cats. If its glowing red, it probably is clogged.

EDIT/
If you have a vacuum gauge you can check the cat. Check vacuum at idle, should be around 20in. Now, check it around 1500RPM...if its low like 15in, the cat is clogged.

If you have no power and its choking out when you nail it, I'm guessing its the fuel pressure regulator. You shouldnt have 80 PSI. I think 55 is as high as you want it.

I have a '92 F150 4x4 with a 302 that runs on gas or propane. I consistenly get 7-7.5 mpg with propane in the city and about 8mpg on the highway. Gasoline numbers are bad too. I get about 10mpg city and 12 mpg highway.

This is with a solid front axle, canopy, winch, skidplates and a heavy rear bumper which should just be as heavy as a F250.

I think I would get better mileage if I had the 351 because the 302 does feel underpowered. Maybe the 4.9L is being overworked as well?

Did you unhook the timing box for the propane? Unplug the box at the SPOUT connector, and put a quick disconnect in place of it. I think what is happening here is that the computer can't control the timing properly.

try pulling codes from computer - poor mileage can be caused by and usually is a bad coolant temp sensor ( not to be confused with temp guage or idiot light sensor ) or a bad o2 sensor. other possibilty is the map sensor - i have seen them go bad where they start sending the wrong alltitude calculations to the ecm and richening up the mixture . dragging brakes ? as to the question about the spark plug wires - if they are a few years old change them -they can look good to the eye but be cracked on the inside - usuall symptoms are bucking on acceleration - when they are real bad you can pop the hood when it's dark and see the electricity running on outside of the wire when the engune is running . good luck

Sorry I haven't posted for soo long but I've been working a lot... now I'm on vacations and have my truck at the mechanic's.
Turns out that the ECU was bad, vacuum system was not connected properly, changed the ECU and everything is getting organized now after we finally got the codes. Fuel PSI is 55 at idle... is that OK???
Now there are only a few problems to solve, we think there is a bad injector that bothers when cold but is okay when truck gets warm. (is that possible?)
What is, and where is the SPOUT CONNECTOR?
THANKS SOOO MUCH FOR YOUR HELPFUL COMMENTS
