I'd go with a large Tru-cool or B&M tranny cooler. Trans temp sensor can be installed to replace the small plug that is about 6" in front of the linkage. Here's a picture

I would suggest draining the fluid from the torque converter and tranny, changing the filter, and then filling it with fresh fluid. There is a plug on the TC for draining. Good Luck, and welcome to FTE!

Most of the early E-4's had a drain plug in the T/C drain it and pull the pan let it drain for several hours or overnight. I have a hayden aux cooler on the M/H as well as a deep cast alum trans pan 3.5q extra of fluid from yourcovers. Put my temp sensor in the machined boss in the pan takes at least 1/2 hour for temp readings to come up in the pan but I have not been over 170 deg so far. B-4 the deep pan did have a problem with it getting hot and burping fluid out of the front area after a hard run through the Quad Cities trying to keep up with a buddy of mine in his 02 PSD pullin his trailer, pulled trans ( I work for AAMCO dealer with 4 stores in IA) sent it to rebuild center to have the T/C checked and new pump seal & bushing all checked ok but I bought header wrap & did the pipes cause the pipes from the man to the turbo run up both sides of the bell. Also did not have temp gauge hooked up when it was burping so I dont know how hot it really got but it don't dump fluid now also I have not run the s**t out of it anymore......Bill

I wouldn't worry about it, most people don't bother. I would install the Sonnax valve and tricumulator spring before you put it back together though. Only cost about $50 and increases pressure and improves shifting.

Look for the Sonnax shift kit, or "sure cure". I found them on ebay.

Just to give you another option.

The V-10 cooler is significantly larger than the stock 7.3 and uses the same brackets.

I know if you buy a transmission from BTS (considered one of the best aftermarket tranny builders anywhere) he installs the V-10 cooler with the tranny replacement.

Also the Sonnax/Tricumulator kit is a great improvement.

Kwazyca is right about the V-10 cooler. I've heard it's an easy install.

Golly, the Hayden coolers are just as good as Tru-cool in my opinion. I'd go with a plate cooler no matter what, just a lot more efficient than standard coolers are. Good luck!
