I've been reading some things of people 'gutting' their air box for a little performance gain. I was wondering if anyone has done this to theirs? Would be something for me to do..
Any air intake mods you do will have no difference in your trucks performance unless you have done more mods as well. Things like a higher flowing exhaust, performance air filter, ect. must be done along with or before for you to notice any difference.
Many will probably reccomend againts doing this. Be careful if you do. I, myself, have noticed quite a difference after I did this. But, I also have a K&N filter(used, $10 off eBay!!!), no cat. converter, and a 3" exhaust from y-pipe collector to a Flowmaster 40 Series(also used, $10). It may not show as much a difference for you.
Gutting the MAF like that is in my opinion a bad idea. It changes the air flow characteristics of the sensor; this difference in air flow is not accompanied by a difference in sensor output voltage, so the mass flow calculation in the computer will be wrong. Whether it is wrong enough to make a difference or not, I couldn't say. It's really up to the owner of the vehicle, but I wouldn't do it to mine. The parts of the airbox that I would think could be cut any would be the end of the inlet pipe going into the bottom of the air filter housing. It has an angled piece with holes in it I suppose to make it more quiet.
