alright i bought a 70 F250 for a hundred bucks and it wont start. after talking to the guy i bought it from which is a friend, he told me a few things. The truck lost the acc. belt and over heated. It hasnt ran since..... He told me there are plastic timing gears in there that might have melted. Im not familiar with this motor too much and i thought id ask before I tore it apart. It cranks really easy and all it just wont fire. Ive checked the plug wires, the coil for spark and all that small stuff. So if you all have any clue let me know thanks.
ill give it a try im hoping to head out again this weekend and try a few more things. Id like to get it running and actually get it back to my house. you know if there is any truth in the plastic timing gear thing????
If it got hot enough to melt the timing gears you have a lot of other problems to worry about. I would do a compression check first, that will tell you if it is worth going further. If it has low compression and adding a teaspoon of oil to the cylinder helps in a big way, he got it hot enough to ruin the rings and all you can do is tear it down.
If compression is OK in all cylinders, then you can start trouble shooting.
The fact that you have spark shows the dizzy is turning - which requires the timing gears. Could still have jumped time, but not real likely.
A shot of starting fluid down the carb will check for gas problems - if it starts problem is with the gas delivery, if it does not then you can look elsewhere for the problem.
Most likely the engine is OK and the problem is a bunch of little things that have ganged up on you - things like the spark plug gap, dirt in the carb, bad wires and the like.
But it could be serious so check the compression first.
