A Question about orange peel...

Hey guys, we recenlty painted our '86 Iroc Z. Well the paint orange peeled really bad. I've also noticed that almost ALL new cars these day look the same.. Is it just a trait of the single stage acrylic enamel?

That sure is a oddity of todays vehicles , for real. I pulled up along side a brand new, full size Mercedes S320 yesterday. Gezz, I think it was PAINTED in a orange grove. The new Lexus cars have some awesome clearcoat jobs, as well as many American cars do. Enamels can be shot as flat as the bc/cc urethanes, it is all in the spray guns atomization capabilities, the skill level of the person spraying, along with the mixing components and the quality of the paint being sprayed. ..

I think heavy factory OP just has to do with what kind of mood the techs were in, when they set up the paint spray robots on that day.

When you buy your paint, be sure to tell them, as close as possible, the temp at which you will be painting. Too fast of a reducer will let the paint flash before the "droplets" lave a chance to run together for that smooth finish.

A smooth finish without sanding is possible, but all the varibles need to be right.

If you sprayed several coats you should be able to color sand and buff unless it's really horrible.

IT's not bad, as it cured most of it came out.. It looks a whole lot better than almost all the new cars I see on the road.... The guy that painted it (my father) hadn't painted a car in over 10 years. I think it was mostly the hardener we used. We used a different brand on the spoiler, and ground effects that didn't do as bad.

Its either your technique, spray gun setup and pressure, or choice of reducer that will give you orange peel. Gun too far from service, too low airpressure, too fast a reducer, paint not reduced enough, wrong tip and cap in the spray gun, ect. Urethanes can spray pretty flat. Cars today use basecoat clearcoat paint not single stage enamel, that wasn't used since the late 80's by car manufacturers. As far as the orange peel on new cars now, I believe that has something to do with the sheetmetal. I don't think the sheetmetal is perfectly straight and orange peel will help hide any waviness a panel has, just my opinion.
