Hi all - I had previously posted a question about some serious shaking, and what appeared to be a fair amount of oil leaking around the engine. A few people responded with suggestions of either a blown head gasket or a thrown rod. Can anyone explain to me exactly what a thrown rod is? Is there a place to check if a rod is physically missing? If so, if this a major overhaul to repair? Also, what is the technical/full name of such a rod? As you can all tell, I'm a beginner! Thanks!!
Did you ever check to see if there was any oil left in the crankcase? Did you look at the oil pan and the side of the block for holes?
A thrown conecting rod will normally go through the side of the block, this happens when the rod breaks in half, leaving the piston at the top of the cylinder, part of the rod still connected and the other half of the rod connected to the crankshaft, it spins around free until it ends up in the wrong position and goes through the block. If this happened the engine block is trash.
Hey-
It's not a thrown rod as this is a piston rod which usually breaks off of the piston itself and goes through the engine block usually leaving a very large hole. If the rod is actually thrown you should be able to see it pretty clearly.
