connecting rod direction

does it matter what direction the rods go, i recently pulled an engine apart and was just sitting here thinking about some stuff and i'm not totally sure the rods were all facing the same direction, i dont really remember and i am not at my house were i can go look do the rods have to face a certain direction?
also are 428 rods the same length as 390 rods if they are different what are the differences?

ok let me see if i can do this from memory... as an assembled unit, the oil holes on the bottom of the rod should face the opposing bank of cylinders. mine were all numbered and those numbers on the rod and cap matched up.

Rods for V8's are made to go one certain way. If you look at the rod from the side, you will see that the beam is usually not centered on the big end ( some makes may differ on this ). The big end has more material on one face and the bearing is located closer to the other side, centered in relation to the beam. This is for clearance for the fillet ( cheek ) radius on the crank journal. If the rod is installed the other way, there may be interference if the crank radius is large enough. The rod usually has a larger chamfer on the I.D. on this side to help with clearance. They are numbered so that if you install them with the numbers toward the outside of the engine, they are installed in the proper relation to the crank. No offense intended to anyone, but the numbering system is a basic way to ' dummy proof ' the installation. Rods and caps always go with the slots for the bearing tangs on the same side, and the numbers mark the rods for this also. All this takes the oil squirt holes, if used ( some engines don't use them ), into account, too.

you are correct 71_4X4_390 the oil holes on the small end face the opposing bank, also there should be a mark on the top of the piston, it faces the front of the motor. Mine had a "V" type mark.
