Has anyone run one? I just put one on my 390 and the back of the alt almost touches the head. The part that almost touches has the rear bearing in it and I wondered if the heat off the head would harm the bearing?
I run the proform GM one. I had to drill out the hole for the really long bolt but other then that I have no problem. I had to custom cut some spacers for the really long alt bolt though. I'll have to check tomorrow since I don't have a light to see it tonight. It will fit and I believe it may be close. But heat hasn't been a problem for me so far.
I know my Jegs Chrome 100 amp and even my stock alt. were all very close to the head. I had to wedge some rubber behind some of the terminals to stop arcing. Just another place thay had room and didn't use it.
Hatemaking/n....have you had that alt very long? Looks like that bearing would get real hot. If you've run yours awhile with no problems then I'll quit worrying about it....Thanks
Greg....I had the same problem so I had the alt. reclocked. The back can be positioned in 4 different places. Mine came in the 12:00 position, moved it to 9:00, works great.
I run one, but I make my own mount hanging it low on pass. side. It hangs on long bolt from front of head, then I make a swing bracket from bottom timing cover bolt to slot for adjustment. I have this on two FE's, and tested to 6800 rpm!!! Never thrown a belt, and not close to anything to create heat.

I swung it down low yesterday and it looked good down there but I couldn't see how to mount a swing bracket. Everything I came up with was in the way of the timeing marks on the balancer. As usual I probably tryed to over engineer it.
I use simple 1" wide by 1/4" thick steel, bolt to lowest timing cover hole, slot the far end(for adjustment) and have the alt. hang basically straight down. This gets it far enough away so as not to interfere with anything.
Yes, the swing bracket needs "shimmed" out maybe 1" or so to get it out far enough to reach alt bottom bolt. I used some 3/8" thick wall tubing(spacers that came from something I bought). I put bracket on rear side of alt, not front side so as to keep from shimming it any farther than necessary. The adj. hole is threaded thru so who cares which side it comes from. I used to have a picture of it on here, but think I deleted it. If you want, I'll try to get another picture put up. I'll check my galleries to see if it's there?

I'm headed out to the garage now to take a look and try to visualize what your saying. Sometimes I tend to make things more complicated than they are. A picture would be great, then I'll probably say why didn't I think of that. Thanks a lot.

I have one on mine. It is close to the head as well. Unfortunately I don't have enough run time on mine to say for sure, but I doubt it will be a problem.
I have mine kinda like frieghtrain. It's semi low mount on the passenger side. I've been running mine for about the last 3 or 4 months and no problems YET! If my ex will let me barrow the digital camera I'll take pics for you. I did have to make a spacer like frieghtrain said.
Freightrain....cancel the pics, I got it. Just like you said, except I used an adjustment arm off an old alt. instead of making the one you described.(turned upside down) Works great.... Thanks again....
I'm putting something in the thread so I can get an email notification so I can save it in my email. I will add that I've thought about doing this but didn't see how it would work, now I know. Thanks.
Run your motor for an hour. Feel the alternator, even a stock one. It's dang HOT enough to burn your hand... I doubt the head's heat will do anything to the bearing
Besides, inside the head surface just behind the alternator is water... darn, put some heat-sink grease and a piece of aluminum between the two and it'll be a water cooled alternator bearing!
