Timing chain slack?

Hey guys, just got the pan off the 429 that im gonna drop in my 83 f250 and it seems to me that the timing chain has way too much slack in it. the engine was supposedly rebuilt so i checked one of the rod bearings and it looked good, now im wondering why the chain would be so worn or if im just ignorant and its supposed to move that much. if i touch it on the bottom it wobbles around a bit and it can go back and forth on the the gear also. how tight are those supposed to be?

Timing chain slack?

LAST EDITED ON 25-Feb-01 AT 08:58 PM (EST)[p] There should be no appreciatible slack what so ever. If there is any slack in the timing chain (other than very slight movement when pushing on the chain with your fingers) you will progressively accellerate wear on your cam and crank sprockets as time goes by. Definitely change the timing set as well as the oil pump while the pan is off, it's cheap insurance andif I'm not mistaken you'll have to change it anyhow because of oil pan differences when istalling a 429-460 in a truck!
