I am stationed in CA and understand that CA trucks have an emmissions flash, I will be on vacation in Indiana for most of July. Would I get a non-emissions flash if the recall was performed in Indiana? Also, is there any differance in performance between the flashes? Thanks
Not withstanding anything to the contrary contained herein,
I do not authorize any flashing/reflashing of any of this
Truck's computers; This prohibition is of the essence.
I was under the impression that if the vehicle is a "California vehicle" they have to flash with the California Flash, unfortunately. I asked in Nevada if I could get a non Cali flash and that is what they said, and that it would be illegal for them to not do Cali-flash.
Just what I heard, that the vehicle needs to comply with the state laws and smog restrictions it was made for.
i hope ford-doctor chimes in on this topic. and i can only state what i have done in my shop.
our pc's that do the reflash pick up a code number of the flash and up date that flash number" # with a, a to d" so if we have a cali car which all of nj is it flashes that predetermined code. i have no control over it as the computer does it all.
again i hope ford-doc chimes in and gives us a ford low down on how it works. for us s/d men
I wish Ford-doc would chime in here too as if I can find a way to get rid of the Cali Crad without screwing up my warranty or something, I sure would do it.
You can certainly fix most any of the "emissions" problems (EBP, EGR, ect) with an SCT Pro Racer package for the diesel, if you feel like doing a little tuning yourself.
You can eliminate the EGR functions altogether, you can remove the EBP based boost and fueling influence, along with access to several hundred other parameters for both the engine and transmission.
Motorhaven can get you an Xcal 2, the SCT Advantage software, and a set of diesel base files for around $800 if I am not mistaken.
With some practice you can also extract far more power than you will ever need...I have a base file from another company that I have made some mods to, making 465 rwhp and over 860 rwtq on #2 alone, with stock turbo and injectors.

Thanks PSD! I am a little leary about doing the tuner thing. I get so confused when I read all of the "hey it's okay and wont screw up your warranty" and "don't ever do that, Ford will repossess your truck!" type of posts. It's almost like those old cartoons where you got a guy with horns on the head on one shoulder and a chick with a halo on the other.
I know by your posts that you truly do have a good understanding and wealth of knowledge on this stuff, but 45000 bucks to me was a major undertaking. That was not an easy purchase for me.
I appreciate your advice and will do more research, just for my piece of mind. I trust your recommendations would indeed give me much pleasure when stomping on the accellerator. The numbers you posted certainly illustrate that. Where can I research and find more info specific to the warranty concerns I might have? If I had something in writing to pull out of my back pocket, if ever questioned, I would feel much more secure in tuning my truck.
