A few days ago my 97 Mountaineer started showing 116deg F as the exterior ambient temp on the overhead display. Per the service manual I have confirmed that I need a new sensor as the resistance at room temp of the current one is too low. I also confirmed that the interior unit is working as it shows -40 open circuit and +140 short circuit.
That said, does anyone know where to get a replacement besides the dealer? I am going to see if I can locate one at a junk yard but would like other options. Does anyone know the Ford P/N for it? The service manual does not have them.
I am hoping to revive this thread... might anyone be able to shed some light on my original question. For a while the temp sensor had an accurate reading again... but it has finally completely died. Electrical checkout per the shop manual confirms that the inside parts are fine and that it is indeed the temp sensing unit at the nose of the truck that is busted.
I even tried going to the dealer and all they were able to come up with was the sensor for a newer model year. The pinout is reversed from that, but I can work around that... what I could not work around is that the little thermocouple inside appears to be for a different temp range so it was off all the time.
Just a thought... maybe open up the bad unit and see what parts are bad? Unless it's an all-in-one IC, you might be able to find replacement discrete components to fix it.
