I have noticed a small puddle inside the left front tire and smelled the fluid and it smells like gear oil. Last winter when I locked up the hubs when in 4 wheel drive it make noise that sounded like it was coming from the front left. Since then I have replaced the wheel bearings on both sides because the shop that did the last brake job didn't tighten the lock nuts for the wheels and whe this brake job was done they didn't even need a scoket to remove them. Now I have the leak. Any way to check and see if the front wheel drive is boogered up or if it is jut a faulty seal? Thanks!

Two questions:
1. We need to know the year of your truck. A tip.....go to your profile, and fill in your signature. Put in as much detail about the truck as possible. To get an idea of what is usual.....just put your curser over a signature at the top of some of the users.
2. Since it was a brake job.....have you checked the bleeder valve. I mean, it was such a "GOOD" job, they may have left that loose too.
The truck is a 1997 old body style 4x4 crew cab long bed. I haven't tried putting it in 4x4 since the last snow. The current brake job was good. No leaks from bleed valve and resevoir is full. Knuckle (?) joint is wet. The puddle is clean as the differential fluid was just changed about 2,000 miles ago.
is your truck a 250 or 350? if its a 250 the only way to change the diff oil is to remove the axles and remove the third member from the axle housings. if this is the case i would talk to the guy who did the work cause they probably cut the seal when they put the axle back in.
Check the vent tube on top of the housing. With the warmer temps I've seen two vehicles with similar problems in my shop. It's alot easier to check this than replace the seals.
