I have a 84 f150 4x4 with a 300 6 and 4spd trqnny. i was starting it one day and it wasnt starting good so i turned to the key to the run postion. the engine kept cranking. i then turned the key to the off position and it still kept cranking. does anyone know how to fix this problem and what is causing it? thanks
The only way that the starter can continue to crank the engine without fireing up,and the key in run or off,is for the starter solenoid to remain either stuck or energized. To test, first remove the small wire from the "S" terminal at the solenoid. Then hook the cable back on the battery{assuming you unhooked it to stop the cranking}.If the starter begins to crank again, remove the cable, and replace the solenoid with a new one.If nothing happened when you hooked the cable, using a test light hooked to ground, probe the "S"wire and notice if voltage is present while the key is in the ACC,OFF or RUN positions, there should be none. There should only be voltage when you cycle the key to the START position{do this several times to make sure it's not intermittent}.If voltage was present when it shouldn't be,more than likely the ignition switch is failing internally, otherwise, there is a hot wire that is fused to the "S" wire.9 times out of 10 it is just a bad solenoid.

Don't take anything new for granted!I have sold and installed many a defective solenoid for FORD products. They just get stuck and sometimes let go and sometimes don't.If the solenoid has let go since the first incident, and it's not getting energized at the wrong time,it will get stuck again,so be ready.Oh yeah, the "flat" type solenoid {flat bracket instead of "L" bracket}is likely to act up if the battery cable is not installed on the proper post.Refer to the instruction sheet for proper orientation of the battery and starter cables.
