Hey everyone, my parents have a 1999 Expedition with the 4.6 and it's been acting funny. First off, the wipers come on and off as they please, but someone here suggested the multi-function switch for that. Second, once in a while when it is first started it will blow out a huge cloud of white/blue smoke from the exhaust. Lastly, a few days ago, my father went for a drive and he said that when he went to pass somebody, as soon as it hit the passing gear, it revved all the way up, and the battery light came on and it started chugging. Since that trip, it has noticeably less power. Please offer any advice you can. Thanks, Austynn.
Had the wiper issue when my 99 was brand new - Ford replaced multi-function wiper control under warranty. White/blue smoke on startup could be oil getting past valve guides - at least those were the symptoms for that problem 20 years ago. Think about it - oil is getting into the combustion chamber with the engine off. Immediately burns off on start-up. This thing still have valve guides? CEL on? Have one of the chain parts stores check for OBD codes. Advance Auto does it for free by me. Good Luck.
Ok, now I've witnessed it myself... we went to pass someone and it kicked into the serious passing gear, and while it didn't seem to run differently, the battery light did come on. Strange. Also, we went to Advance and they tested it. Nothing. Thanks, Austynn
Thanks! We'll get a new serpentine belt today and take it to work tomorrow to test it out. PaulC, they tested it with the OBD(?) thing and it checked out fine. They didn't test the battery.
The OBD tester won't tell you if the alternator is going bad, or even if the battery is weak. Also won't tell you if the idler pulley spring is weak and allowing the belt to slip at high RPM. If the belt is old, not a bad idea to replace it, but I can't guarantee it will cure the issue.
