She said yes
She never saw it coming and I took her by complete surprise. It was great and I wouldn’t do it any differently.
The day started no different that any other, I did not wake up saying to myself, today is the day. We were bored and decided to go for a drive/roadtrip. We went to this place called Cave-in-Rock, IL and walked around for a while and read the history on the place, ate a late lunch and then headed towards Vienna, IL to watch my nephews baseball game. On the way we went through this town called <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comElizabethtown</st1:City>, <st1:State w:st="on">IL</st1:State>. We drove by this place called the “Grand Rose hotel” and I saw the gazebo out on a rock cliff overlooking the <ST1
lace w:st="on">Ohio River</ST1
lace>. I decided I wanted to go out there and see the scenery and if it sufficed this is where I would ask. She was clueless to about what was about to happen but she really likes older homes and buildings so when I saw this place I knew it was "the place." Remember I had never even been in this area of Southern IL before in my life (one of the few places I haven't been), so it was all new to me too but I knew where the roads went, like a real man huh!!!!!The website for this place is:

We drove up to the place and I immediately thought, this is the place I want to ask her to marry me. The gazebo in this story is on the main page, upstream from this along the Ohio river is rock cliffs and outcroppings for about a half mile, the river is very wide here and it looked like something out of a Cape Cod magazine or something. The hotel is owned by the State of <st1:State w:st="on">IL</st1:State> and is the oldest hotel in IL. The lady that runs the place seemed really cool too and was happy I chose that place to ask the big question, she invited us back anytime. Anyway we first went into the gift shop area then walked out to the gazebo and I saw a rock Ledge about 10-15 feet below the gazebo. We went down there but every time I mustered up the courage to ask a boat came by real close or someone walked up. Eventually it was just me there as she had started walking upstream on top of the cliffs. I had to get her back to just this spot, from this spot nobody could see us and the only thing we could see was the gazebo and we were overlooking the river. How to get her back over here and where I want her??????? So I lied to her. I had her come look at all these fish in the water down there, when she came over I said you have to go way out to the end of this cliff to see them. She did and said, I still can’t see them, so she laid down and crawled out a little further to peer over the edge. There were no fish, but I had successfully diverted her attention so when she turned again to say “I don’t see them” I was down on a knee with the ring in the box in my hand and asked her.
TOTALLY UNEXPECTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I ask her she jumped up and down screaming at the top of her lungs with joy (maybe she realized she was in the middle of nowhere and had no clue as to how to get home too, I don’t know). After the ring was already on her finger I asked after a minute or two if that was a yes. Again jumping and screaming. After two or three tries I finally got a yes. About an hour later we were able to pick up a cell phone signal to tell our friends and family. Of course I called my two best men first.
I do pick the spots, she learned along time ago that if I want to go somewhere and ask her to go she’s better off not to ask just go along.
On the way out of the town I said, hey lets turn on the radio and see what the first song is that we hear after we became engaged. I kid you not, it was Dierks Bentley and he was singing, are you ready for this……..”What was I thinking?” http://www.cmt.com/artists/az/bentley_dierks/videos.jhtml
We laughed, almost put my Ford in the ditch and then turned the radio off.
And that’s my story and I’m stickin to it.
Pfogle, hang in there. there are worse things than being single. Just ask some of your married buddies!
