Ax, I figured I might have to alter the pump output a bit. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I believe the pressure valve on the GM pumps is adjustable but I may be wrong (hey, it happens now and again) Its been alot of years since I rebuilt a GM pump. I could always swap in a pressure valve from a mid sized GM platform.
I have a local hydraulic shop that I've worked with for years (I designed and built several double drum winches for use in cell tower erection) and have a good relationship with. They assure me that they can make me a pressure hose. If not, I added your link to my favorites. Its always good to have a back up plan and I appreciate the information.
AX, I have inspected the steering box time and again, and when the steering wheel is moved, the shaft with the arm (?) on it moves up and down......I have found that the bushings to the pump are bad or non-existant..... There are two of them. I have already ordered and recieved the bushings....However, I am seriously considering the whole replacement thing on the steering box though. I like the idea of having pwr steering on that long of a trip. About how expensive do you think it would be to do the mods you have mentioned? I can do 99% of the wrenching myself. I say that because I'm sure there will be something that I can't do myself and have to get a shop to do for me. I ask because I am on a fairly tight budget now.....
The biggest hose problem on the Toy box is the return line fitting. It is a 17 mm fitting that no one else uses. You can use the original straight fitting (the return line is low pressure so Toy went with a simple push on and clamp return hose) But on my truck there was interference with the header. I ordered a set of hoses from Mid Fifty, which came with an adapter fitting and a std 90* 6 an fitting screwed into it. Unfortunately that combo assembly also stuck out too far from the box to clear the header pipe as well. I modified the stock fitting by brazing in a steel 90* bend cut from the original Toy hoses I got with the box directly into the fitting as tight as possible. That cleared the header, barely, but I wasn't satisfied with the appearance or with using rubber hoses. I then found Gottashow and they make their own low profile banjo style fittings specifically for the Toy box which clear the header with room to spare, they allow me to keep the hoses tight to the box, point them in any direction for appearance , and they offered them in custom lengths in SS braid to match the other hoses I have underhood.
The parts needed besides the box and pump (and new column/wheel if you decided to go that route) should be just under 200.00 for the mount, pitman arm, u joint, sector shaft nut and hose set. The HD tie rod is 44.00. You'll also need a lower column bushing if you use/modify the original column. I bought my box used on car_part.com for 75.00. My engine was already equipped with a PS pump, the truck had ram assisted PS on it with the stock box when I bought it.
Ok guys....I rebuilt the carb today and found.......drumroll please........a bunch of HAIR and gunk in the front needle and seat!!!!! I put it back together, but I am still having problems....I havent completely readjusted it yet, so off to the garage I go......I'll update in a little while.....
WOO HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! Carb problem is solved.....Turns out a Holley carb doesnt let the engine run so well when it has grass and hair in the needle and seat....Imagine that! I took it out on the street, set the idle mixture screws, and tomorrow I will set the floats.....PROPERLY.....But the road test tonight woke up a few neighbors, and got the local cops out of the doughnut shop, but it runs MUCH better.....And your right, at least I dont have to drive 50 miles just to adjust the carb anymore.....Off to bed....I can rest for today as I have accomplished something.
EDIT: P.S. Check my gallery now....I have more pics up of the motor and the truck....Whew...Where is the bed again?
I'm glad to hear that things are going good and you're making progress. I can't wait to upset the neighbors again but it seems like everytime I step out in the garage I take about three steps backwards. I'm pretty danged frustrated at the moment!!
I did manage to get my oil pump and pan installed on the engine and get it painted (pics in gallery) but that is the only forward progress.........AAAAAAAAGGHH!
The pics of your engine looks great! Nice job! I'm also on a very tight budget (the translation for tight = non existant)
If your neighbors didn't like the noise from your truck then I'm guessing that they wouldn't be real thrilled with a huge blue cloud of tire smoke either huh? (your boy would love it though)
LOL Bobby, I am the manager of a 106 unit apartment complex.....LOL They dont like ANYTHING fun! I can get the tires to break loose pretty good even thought the truck still isnt running quite right according to my standards. I need to find a speedo cable for it pretty darned quick....I forgot I didnt have one, and now I have tranny fluid all over. Where do you find the numbers at on the tranny on a C-6? I have "kinda" looked....My wife says I look OVER things, not AT things.
As for budget, I have about $300- $400 per month to spend on it now....I just did away with the storage unit...That was a whopping $200 a month! ouch!
I'm not sure where the numbers are on a C6 (been awhile since I had one). Wheres the tranny leaking from? If its a pan gasket or rear seal then its no big deal to fix. A front seal is more of a pain as you have to pull the trans.
I think I'm married to the same woman.
Thats cool about the budget! Right now I'm lucky to come up with $100/month. If I could just get the kids to stop eating. I've tried to explain to them that it is a nasty habit and they really should break it. I even tried to get them in a 12 step program but nothing works.........lol
Thankfully there is a really low priced pull-a-part wrecking yard near me.
My neighbors are fairly forgiving. The last time I ran the truck down the street I managed to stall it and the battery died so the neighbors all had a good laugh as I pushed the beast back to the house.
Some days chicken........some days feathers
You guys are giving me quite a chuckle. While some of my buddies are talking about injector sizes and and reprogramming their new computer chips, you guys are talking about hair and grass in the carb, tranny leaks out the speedo cable hole, and being married to the same woman. I can relate.
As a "temporary" fix, you could find any speedo cable for a C6 with the fitting on the end, dike it off and use it as plug. That at least stops the tranny leak. Of course finding any cable may be as difficult as finding the correct one. Good luck.
OK, I called the local dealership...I GUESSED at the year of the transmission and said it was a 77. They gave me a part number D4TZ1760-E . The leak is comming out of the speedo hole, so I need the speedo cable to plug the hole.....I found one online though, and will (hopefully) have it within a week.
Bobby, I have even tried tying bricks to my kids heads in an effort to get them to quit growing so I can at least SLOW down the steady flow of $$$ out for food....No dice. Oh well....I guess I'll have to resort to the threat of telling them that their cars will never be finished if they keep growing. :P
We have a low priced Pull-A-Part about 40 miles from here....I LOOVE going there...ALL KINDS of things to find out there....never enough time....I like to go to look at the vehicles, and my son likes it because it's right next door to the local Air Force Base. He wants to join the Air Force when he gets older....but enough of that for now....back to the subject.
I drove the truck about 5 miles last night...got onto our street and decided that I was putting it away anyway, so why not do a little burnout? Well, I mashed the gas, and.......it fell on it's face and stalled on me!!!!!!!! Talk about frustrating! LOL I kinda laughed a bit, and called my wife to come and give me a jump......I still dont have it done up right. LOL Gotta make more adjustments....I hooked up the vac advance and it misses even more....So I disconnected the vac advance for now.....
P.S. Texan, I didnt want to do it that way because I am going to put in aftermarket speedo, so I will get the right cable and just pay a little more for it to do it right....We can either do it right the first time, or do it wrong, then have to come back later when it's less convenient and do it right then....I prefer to do it the first time even if it means I have to wait a little longer. It WAS a good idea though.
