Oh, my son was thinking already when it happened....He said "Dad, we need to fix the carburator dont we?" I laughed inside and grimaced on the outside.
I cant figure out how to post the pics yet....Been on this site for some time, and cant figure it out....GRRRR
This little hic up will make my son a better man....We will rebuild the carb on Tuesday together....Then we will flog the heck out of it....I almost forgot how much power a bigblock has....until I goosed it a little today when it was having problems....It roasted the tires until I got out of the throttle....dang it! All that power and it isnt even running right!

Congrats! cool pic! thats cool that the little fella is involved in the truck with you. I know that sometimes it makes the job twice as hard and twice as long but its always fun. My youngest is becoming a truck nut and has claimed my 59 Dodge D100 as his own. I guess I have a few years to help him make it roadworthy...should be a fun.

Did the carb rebuild do the trick? Do you know how much fuel pressure you have? Sometimes, if it's too high, the pressure can overwhelm the float. Good progress is contagious. Jag

We're going to buy the rebuild kit tonight and rebuild the carb tomorrow. No pressure gauge on it yet, but it has the holley red pump which is "supposed" to be able to be used without a regulator. We will see if this cures the problem....If not, I'll have to get a gauge and see what my pressure is and go from there....

I had a flooding problem on my 292/ F600 so we put a kit in and still had the same. We put on a gauge to check the pressure and it was so high that it broke the gauge! Had to replace the stock fuel pump with a rebuild to fix it.

Pull that stock steering box and do the Toyota PS gearbox swap before heading for FL. It's a one day bolt in project, and you'll be thanking me on bended knee when you arrive. That steering box was already an antique design in 53, and fifty years later towing a car cross country with it is not a good idea. We drove our truck home cross country after buying it with the stock box without towing anything, it's more than a bit scarey when it decides to change lanes on it's own every time a semi passes. That gearbox was the first thing I pulled out when I got home.

Also closely check your front suspension including the king pins, tie rod ends and drag link. Every component has to be in good shape, especially for towing.

With regards to the power steering unit, where do you mount the pump? Is there a bracket that I can buy? or would I need to fab one up? I have no access to a metal fab shop anymore....(used to be a welder for about 10 yrs)

The king pins were replaced before I bought the truck, but I will replace the tie rod ends.....My biggest problem with the steering is the steering box bushings.....Their bad right now, so the truck has a tendancy to make unexpected lane changes sometimes. Quite scarry. Which yoda steering box do I need? What kind of yoda does it come in??? Once I do that, I can take the wagon wheel I have for a steering wheel off and put on a real one! LOL

Look for a 1979 -1985 Toyo 4x4 (the years with the solid front axle before they went independant)
Good luck

LOL...Not sure. In my truck I'm running a 500ci Caddy and using the stock power steering pump in the stock location. I will have to have a local hydraulic shop make a special pressure hose for me with standard fittings on one end and metric on the other.
I'm not sure if I'll run into pressure problems as in the case of GM pumps and Mustang II racks and pinions(I havent got that far yet) Hopefully I'll find out within the next month or so when I get the engine back in and running.
I'd go ahead and try the stock Ford pump and bracketry to make the pulley situation easier.

The box you need is off a Toyota 4x4 pickup, I believe off the top of my head that the years are 80-84. They are available used or you can buy a rebuilt one at your local autoparts store. Mid Fifty sells a conversion kit with the bolt in mount, pitman arm, and steering shaft U joint. If you want to use the stock column you'll need a lower column/shaft bushing, or else an aftermarket or donor column. Need to make that decision before ordering the U joint. I went with an Ididit tilt column I ordered it @ 32" but ended up cutting it down to 30". Order a 30" column. I also used a Grant 15" steering wheel. MF also sells lower column mounts, dash drops, and floor plate if you go aftermarket column. (they also offer the best price on the column)
You can use a stock PS pump (NOT one off a Lincoln tho) and matching mount that was used on your engine. Gottashow.com will make up the correct hoses in whatever length you need, and their box fittings are the lowest profile available for engine/exhaust clearance. The Toy box is not any larger than stock and mounts in the same position, but the hose fittings point at the engine and may be tight with a standard 90* bend on the return hose. Buy the heavy duty tie rod when you order the other conversion parts.

The drunken money steering is due to worn worm and sector gears not bushings. You might be able to adjust out some of it depending on how badly worn and how many times it was adjusted before but that's just a bandaid IMHO.
It will be more expensive to rebuild it than doing the PS conversion and still leave you with an upper body workout machine. These trucks were not intended to drive long distances.

Bobby,
That caddy pump may be too high pressure for your box. Caddys Lincolns etc used a higher pressure pump to give the land barges fingertip steering so the blue hairs can drive and talk on their cell phones at the same time.
Every hydraulic shop I checked would not do PS hoses as the pressures are much higher than typical hydraulic pumps and rams use. Gottashow.com makes custom hoses and makes their own low profile fittings including the 16 mm and "odd" 17mm needed for the Toy box in rubber or SS braid in whatever length you need. Very quick service too, mine arrived ~ 3 days after I ordered them.
