Back fire

The engine is a 351CJ with a 4V Holley
Today for the second time, about the time the engine caught to start running, there was a monster backfire. My wife said all the neighborhood lawn mowers quit. The engine cranked for maybe 10 seconds, released the key, cranked again for maybe 10 seconds and as the engine started running comes the big POW! The engine ran OK after that and never showed any kind of problem for the rest of the day. Are talking about a timing problem? Maybe a carb? Anybody shed some light on this?

Was it an intake pop or was it out of the exhaust?

LxMan, thanx for your reply. The big POW came from the exhaust, both times.

Ford390 Thanx. Tomorrow it will be easy enough to check the timing, hopefully getting it started with or without the back fire.
