What is the difference in a C6 for a 4x2 and a C6 for a 4x4? What would have to be done to use a 4x2 on a 4x4? Just the tailhousing? Would Advance Adapters sell anything that could be used??
Thanks
The difference is the tail and the output shaft on the trans. See the 2wd uses an output shaft that allows the use of a slip yoke. The 4wd uses an output shaft that fits into a transfer case. They are not interchangeable and just changing the tail will not make it fit. To change the output shaft would require a complete tear down of the trans.
In addition Ive seen different shift lever arangements. I recently got a 2wd C6 and installed it in my 79 bronco w 4wd. Ran into the mentioned tailshaft differance and yes, it was almost a complete disassembly to change.
Cant say for sure what shift lever arrangement you will use. But the 2wd tranny had it's hanging down below the pivit while my 4wd was above the pivit. It was easier to chage than the taishaft though!

Where did you obtain the new tailshaft? Did you use any manual to help with the swap? Thanks
Katt,
There is also the option of using a divorced transfer case(not atatched directley to the tranny). In that case someone at Advanced addapters may be able to guide you to what is available. They would probably be able to help you also with the new output shaft for your C6 if you go with a married TC,(they can attatch almost anything to any other thing and make it work)they are very helpful over the phone also.
Jeff
I just used the origional tail shaft & housing from my bronco. It ment having two torn down trannys at once, but what ta heck, I had two torn down 400's and an empty Bronco in the garage also!
Basically, I just pulled the old short shaft out of the dead tranny, then tore apart teh new to install it. Had to remove the pan, valve body, front pump, & gear pack. I was able to remove teh clip ring from teh "front clutch" without removing to pull the shaft.
I also rebuilt my Big Block 2x4 C6 using my small block C6 output shaft, no problem. I strongly recomend the Haynes manual, it's much less confussing than the FoMoCo shop manual.
