Well this is my first post on this site, so hello to everyone. Here's the problem: my passenger-side power window started acting up a few days back. It rolls down fine but will not roll back up; you have to help it with your hands. I removed the door panel and it appears that the gear on the motor locks up and will not lift the window by itself. Should I replace the entire motor or just buy a new gear kit?
Assuming the window motor is a factory unit, the motor is 15 years old. Even if the motor itself is still ok, and the gears are gone (which may or may not be true), just replacing the gears may solve the problem temporarily at best. The motor cant be too far behing in wear, and if it fails soon after, you will need to do the work twice. Those motors are not that expensive. In the other hand, if it is the motor, leaving the old gears is too a recipe for disaster. Just bite the bullet and change them both as a unit. Also...buy a new motor, not rebuilt. I have had bad experiences with rebuilt window motors.
My motor on the passenger side is doing the same thing. I replaced the drivers side about two years ago, but all you need to replace are the three teflon cams inside the motor. Those three cams wear out after use and are easy to replace, the problem is finding those three cams. I found my last ones on e-bay, almost all Fords of this vintage use the same cams.

Those little buggers can now be found in the HELP section of your local AutoZone - I've found them there on two ocassions.

How do you get to the cams? I have a haynes manual but all it shows is the manual roll down windows. Does the motor have to come out to do this? Both of my windows are acting this way. So I want to know what I'm dealing with. Thanks
I've read you can just replace the gears and solve the problem. Advance carries the gears for the Explorers, often in stock. The gear for the 1994 Explorer is a nylon part that comes with its own bushings and a pack of grease. I think I paid about $35 for it when I bought it a couple of weeks ago, before going on vacation.
Right now I'm looking for a schematic or another post explaining the gear replacement. If you know of anything please e-mail me at dboyd351@earthlink.net. Good luck.

Yeah, in my area AutoZone carries the gears, mine is a '90 f150. You might have to drill or cut some holes to get to the screws holding the motor in place, but on my truck it was fairly easy. I fixed both the driver and passenger sides.
