I just bought this 79-250 and have had a lot of probs. I thought it was over-heating but come to find out the gas lines are getting hot because they are rubber and is causing vapor lock in the lines and i have to stop every so often to let my truck cool down and then it will run for a little bit. I'm not sure what to do.
where are the lines rubber. my guess is rubber should insulate the gas more than metal would. i would make sure that there isnt a metal line the is brushing up agenst a header or manifold somewhere. also check for leaks u could be sucking air into the pump or somthing dump like that. idk thats my $.02
Are you sure it's vapor locking? When it quits, did you look down the carb and move the throttle? There is supposed to be two squirts of gas into the engine. but if it's vaporlocked there will be no gas squirts...
I've always been told that metal lines are better, because the rubber retains the heat and is more likely to cause vapor lock. Plus metal is safer/stronger. Replace the rubber with as much metal as you can, and route it away from the exhaust and make sure it sits a inch or two away from the engine.
