Manifold gasket replacement

Hey guys, I gotta relace the intake/exhaust manifold gasket on my 85 f150 300 inline 6. Anybody do this before? What should I look out for? Ive been told that the bolts can break real easy. What do I do if this happens? Any advice would be great cause Im not sure how hard this is going to be.

There is an anti-seize lubricant that should have been applied to the bolts when it was assembled. I am not sure of your situation, but when you do put it back together, make sure that you use it, this will make future repairs easier. The bolts see a lot of high heat and corrosion and this will help protect them. It is a little tube that cost about $2.50 at Advance Auto.

When I did my 351 the bolts came out easily, but I was prepared to have to use a tap and die to remove broken bolts. Frankly, they were so corroded that I thought I would end up breaking at least half of them, but surprisingly, they came out without a fuss.

Good Luck!

Are you gonna separate the 2 halves of the manifold? If so, there's a gasket between the 2 halves under the carburetor. Leave the 2 halves loose until you get all the bolts started and snug.

Also, I didn't do it, but wished later that I had: Replace the manifold bolts! I had one wring off when I replaced my manifold a year after I did the job the first time. I got a manifold that didn't have 2 cracks in the exhaust manifold! The truck ran and sounded great for 12 years. Sold it earlier this year. 1984 300-six.

I have never had a problem getting the bolts that go into the cylinder head out. I did have some trouble with the 3 bolts that hold the manifold halves together. I had to replace my exhaust manifold twice because it cracked, I then later went to the newer EFI manifolds. If you are going to replace the gasket between the int./exh. manifolds definately use a high temp. antiseize lubricant on the bolts. When you put them in leave them loose, until you have properly torqued the bolts that secure the manifolds to the head. I recommend using a double gasket on the manifold-to-head mating surface. Due to past experiences I do this everytime to ensure a leakproof seal on my truck. Also after a couple days of driving go back in and retorque all the bolts to ensure everything stays sealed and tight. Good luck!

Red face

I concur with the double gasket, and the anti-sieze.
