GE or RCA Washing Machine Tip!
If you have a GE or RCA washing machine and it dosen't want to spin DON'T replace the motor clutch till you try this.
1. UNPLUG the machine!
2. Pry off the front, it is held on by 4 plastic clips.
3. Loosen the 4 motor nuts and slid the motor back to remove the belt.
4. GENTLY! remove the clip from the motor shaft that holds the clutch on.
5. Tap the clutch and it should fall down ( I had to spray a little WD40 on mine) You may have to remove the motor bolts so you can lift it up a little.
6. Remove the clutch.
7. Remove the "C" clip from the clutch and it will come apart. There should be 1 "C" clip, 2 fiber washers, 1 clutch bell, 2 shoes, 2 rubber bumpers, 4 plastic drive cups, and 1 hub.
8. Clean it all up and bead blast the 2 shoes and the inside of the clutch bell. Be care full not to blast the bushing inside the bell. (I stuffed a paper towel in mine).
9. Put it all back together and reinstall on the motor.
10. Reinstall the belt and adjust it up snug.
11. Leave the front off while you try it so you can see if everything "works right".
This cured mine and it is working great. The best price I could find on a new clutch was $109.00 so it is worth the try!
P.S. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR PANTS POCKETS BEFORE YOU WAS THEM! Thats what started all my washer problems, a quarter got in the pump and broke the impeller fins ($42.00 for new pump) then the big blanket my wife was trying to wash was too heavy for the clutch to handle as the tub was still full of water.
Washer parts are a HUGE RIPOFF! Cant buy an impeller for a coulpe of bucks, have to buy the whole pump. Cant buy shoes for the clutch either.
The clutch is pretty close to the same thing as the Go-Kart clutches you get at Northern an they only cost $20.00 bucks or so. WHY is the washer clutch so high?
Hope this helps someone out. Doug.
