outboard motor issues

ok it is to the best of my knowledge a 1973 mercury 402 40 hp 2 cylinder

i just bought the boat noty much more than a week ago...for a while there it was giving me trouble starting ,now i have bigger issues...i took it out to the lake was running no problem when i first went out ....at some point not on the first run away from the boat launch but after she was anchored down in a fishing spot we decided to fire it up and move to a different spot.. no problem ...when we got to our "next stop" it let a small amount of steam out of the cover i thought it was somewhat strange but upon further investigation the steam had cleared and all seemed well...

HOWEVER AS IT WAS GATTING LATE AND MY BRO IN LAW AND I WANTED TO GET BACK TO THE HOUSE BEFORE IT WAS TOO LATE ...WE STARTED IT UP AGAIN... AND MADE OUR WAY TO TOWARD THE BOAT LAUNCH ...WELL ALL THE WAY FROM THE LAST "FISHING SPOT" BACK TOWARD THE BOAT LAUNCH THE RPM ON THE OUTBOARD WAS SLOWLY DROPPING BY ITSELF REGARDLESS OF THE FACT THAT WE HAD THE THROTTLE ABOUT 3/4 OPEN AND SHE EVENTUALLY STALLED OUT ....WHEN THIS HAPPENED IT LET MORE STEAM OUT FROM INSIDE THE COVER THAN I I CARED TO SEE RIGHT AT THAT POINT .WE ENDED UP USING AN ELECTRIC TROLLING MOTOR TO GET BACK TO THE LAUNCH ...

MORAL OF THE STORY...it turns out that it quit circulating the water through to cool the whole system WE OVERHEATED IT TWICE which i know myself is far from good... ity still starts and runs... but i hope we didnt crack any vital parts ..NOW I HAVE NO REPAIR MANUAL AND HAVE NO OUTBOARD EXPIERIENCE BUT I THINK AFTER TRACING ALL THE HOSES THAT CARRY THE WATER THAT I CAN SEE I HAVE AN OK UNDERSTANDING OF HOW IT FLOWS THROUGH ... now we know the water isnt making it to the motor to circulate through ... we pulles the screens off the bottom end where it is supposed to come in and found parts of rubber seems like pieces of what once was a gasket we think more of this made it up inside and is blocking something off...

in order to see whats plugged and whats not we need to remove the lower cover for the motor and drop the "lower end" to get the lower engine cover out of the way ...my question is when i unbolt the lower unit what am i expected to have/see...is there all kinds of small gears and springs that i am going to take a chance on losing or is it just 1 main splined shaft that drives right off the bottom of the motor???i just want to know because if i am going to have small parts falling everywhere i wont take it apart ...i will be forced to take it to a pro from there to fix...

WOW THAT WAS ONE HECK OF A RANT....SORRY GUYS,

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED

A shaft comes down from the power head that drives a rubber star shaped water pump impellor, no springs...at least with the one's I have replaced. They are relatively inexpensive and an easy fix.

Did you cook the paint on the outside of the cylinders?

Never ever start an outboard unless its either in the water, or has a flushing device attached. I've been told not to even crank one over without water in it.

If you do, you can almost be guaranteed to have the impeller disintegrate in the near future.
There used to be a dealer here who would run every motor for a few seconds just to get all the water out before winter storage.
He sold alot of new impellers in the spring.

hey all...

thanks for the quick replies....

i am much more calm now so i will be making more sense now .talked with an older guy that i am friends with and he told me the same thing...about the impeller falling apart, even though i dont know why ...every time we had it running we had it either in water or hokked with the "earmuffs" and a hose... but my friend told me that they may have been dried out from sitting out of water or maybe even the previous owner may have run it without water at some time..

nevertheless i am pretty sure i know what needs to be done and between the efforts of me and my good friend john we will hopefully get it straightened out and will be sure to never run it dry

and a note to huntsman:ALL PAINT WAS INTACT HOWEVER I DID FIND A PLASTIC THREADED HOSE BARB FITTING THAT RUNS FOR ONE OF THE WATER CIRCULATING HOSES...PARTIALLY MELTED/PLUGGED WHICH I AM NOT SURE IF IT WAS MY DOING BUT GIVEN THE HAPPENINGS I WOULDNT DOUBT IT ...and since that has been replaced with a brass one
