hey i was wondering if it was possible if you could put 2 alternators on my 1992 bronco, is it possible, i have too much crap on my truck and it drains the battery, let me know if ya know anything
hey i already have a high output one it is working ok but it not enough, whenever i try to winch it kills it, it would be nice to have more to work with too
you could get a large capacitor. they are not like a battery, all they do is help out the altentor when you are asking for more power than it can dish out all at once. I,d go for about a 5 farad cap
a capacitor is for a short burst of power (like the power surge from an audo amplifier when the bass hits)
A capacitor will do nothing for the prolonged drain from a winch.
you need dual batteries. One for the truck, and one for "accessories". That way, if the winch drains the "accessory" battery, the truck will still run and can recharge the drained accessory battery.
the capacitor will help. a winch pulls an enormous amount of amperage, obviously more than your altenator can put out at once. when the winch is running the cap will help keep the voltage at 13-14V, which will lower the amount of current necessary. I do agree that more battery capacity will help though, get an optima redtop, and add a second one later if you want. I DO NOT recomend using one for acessories and one for the motor though. A winch will drain even an optima alot. Then when your done winching, your altenator has to almost completly charge one battery rather than just add a little to both batteries.
If you install dual batteries in series, (+ of one battery to the + of the other battery and the same for the negatives) both batteries will act as one giant battery sharing the load, and both getting charged at the same time. Thats how i have mine setup, and i haven't had any problems, (i don't even have an aftermarket altenator yet).
You don't want to rig it, because there is alot of current going through those wires. There is all kinds of heavy duty 4 gauge wire connectors and battery terminals to get the job done right. Car audio places have really nice battery terminals that have individual terminals of all different gauges to fit all the accessories you might want to install, and they are made for high current applications. They are a little over priced, but they won't ever have to be replaced.
if you go dual batts run 1gauge just to be sure. also running a 200amp 3g alt would handle everything your dishing out. how many amps is your current alt?
