Anyone know what the dealers are doing? Just replacing the switch? Is this requiring bleeding the brakes? Dealer here has said they need it half a day. Seems like a long time to replace the switch. Wonder what I could buy the new switch for and install it myself?
You could, but it wouldn't satisfy the recall... If they do it under recall it's free, other than not having the truck.. It's deemed a low priority so it get's done when a tech can get to it.
It doesn't have to be bled.
The switch comes with a new jumper harness. If there was fluid in the old switch then you cut the wires and connect in the new harness. if the old switch was ok the new harness just plugs in between the switch and the old connector.
The job actually takes about 5 minutes to do but scheduling doesn't always allow it to be done that quickly or as soon as you get there. That's why they say up to half a day.
I thought i would throw in my two cents.... I own one of approx. 68 trucks that actually cought on fire because of this nightmare. luckily when the cruise freaked out it also caused other things on the same fuse when i started checking things out the pressure swith burst into flames. I was right there with the hood up so the only thing burned was the switch and harness. at the time i had to pay for the fix under my x-tened warranty but happily ford refunded the money after it became recall. this happened spring of 03 and nobody at that time (at the dealership) had heard of this before.
SLENGLAND....You have the 01 though...I thought the recall was only for the 2000? I have an 02' and have been keeping an eye on the harness and so far it is dry as a bone. Althought I would hate to forget to check it just to torch my house.
i have a 2001 supercrew and mine had a recal on it. it took them about 5 min to change the parts out and about 15 min to do the paper work i was in and out in about 25 min max.
also from what i remember of my recall it was all 2000 yr trucks and the 2001 supercrews.
i dont know why they dont recall all the year trucks that have this switch problem.
"i dont know why they dont recall all the year trucks that have this switch problem."
Because large corporations are all about money, you and I are expendable and that will never be different. The glacially slow response to the problems (which have been developing over years) proves my point.
:My thanks to the other posters in this forum for letting us know about it.
Cruise is hardly a necessity, and given their goofy "perpetually hot" wiring harness design I'll never reconnect the switch. Reasons do not exist to have used a hydraulic switch when there is plenty of mechanical linkage available like that use for the OTHER switch in the system, nor do intelligent reasons exist to continue putting that system in millions of cars and trucks.
Use the forum search function for "cruise control switch" for more info and pics.
i just read a story on cnn that said this switch was used on approx. 16 million vehicles and that there have been other fires...just not enought to warrant recalling all the other models that use the switch. the dealer's temp fix is to disconnect until new switchs are available. i got my letter saying to come in and get the new switch about a month ago, just haven't made it in yet. got used to no cruise........
Well thats all fine and dandy...but I paid for it, it had better work right. Besides, I do alot of highway driving and I do drive quite a few miles so cruise is nice to have. Maybe I'll just go down and buy the new design switch and IF they ever include mine, I'll take the receipt and send it in to Ford for a refund.
I just read the internal Ford document on this on the news sites this AM. I have a 2002 that will now be parked at the end of our drive, far away from the house. Funny thing is the wife and I were just talking last night about trading it on a Caddy SRX, but I said I'd like to try and get another year or two out of the F150 Supercrew first.
