cab interchangability 53-56 ?
Effy is a 54. I believe 53-55 are essentially identical to each other right down to the cab mounts.
I understand the difference in the 56 doors but as the cab assys I'll be looking at come with doors, can I also use a 56 cab?
- are the cab to frame mount locations and stlye the same on 53-55 and 56?
- would I simply need to use 56 front fenders to make a 56 cab work?
- will my 54 hood work with the 56 cab?
Plse advise,
Thanks,
It is my understanding that 53-56 cabs are identical as far as frame mounting. Looking at my part catalogs, you would need the 56 fenders in order to use a 56 grill. But all the fender interfaces to the cab are identical, so you could use 54 fenders and grill with a 56 cab (etc). Also, 56 air dams have a recess for the recessed lights of the grill. The gravel shields (valance under grill) are different between the years. 53 is unique. 54 is unique. 55 and 56 are the same. Depends on what grill and park lights are used. The hoods are all identical except for the badging holes.
The fenders are the same for 53 thru 56 (my left front is off of a Nevada 55 (I watched him just unbolt it I hate that dry desert air no rust what fun is that)) it's the air deflectors for the 56 that are different but just in the headlight area. You can use any hood but if you use a 56 cab you may need to use 56 hood hinges (holes are larger for the hood mount shoulder bolts (56 only)) but I may be wrong about the hinges not being interchangable. A front tilt would solve that.
The 56 hood also has a small flat brace at the back with two small bolts sticking thru. I kept the brace but welded it in place and filled the bolt holes

My truck has a 53 frame with a 56 cab on it. This was done by a previous owner, but from what I can tell there were no modifications done to accommodate the cab change. The truck came with a box of parts that included 2 different styles of hinges. Randy's statement about the 56 hinges explains that question I always had.

hood & fenders are the same, to use a 56 grill you need 56 wind deflectors, they have a deeper dimple for the headlight bucket, 56 hood hindges are unique to 56, 53-56 hoods are interchangeable, front & rear cab corners are all the same
part (56 has a small acess hole with a removeable cover, but other wise are the
same) 56 cab will mount on a 55 with no modifiaction, I know this because I have done it. I beiieve that 53-54 valance panels are the same & 55-56 are the
same. The wrecking yard out here in Ab. that you bought the Pontiac grill from has a very nice 55 cab with a nice grill & good front fenders, it's missing 1 door,I can't remember which. It's from a F-350, The fenders have the small opening
because it had 16" dual wheels. I hope this helps. Ozzie.

The source is located a mere 3 hr drive from beautiful downtown Carleton Place, so a case of beer and a tank of gas will cover the freight. Could probably do better on price with whistle-tricker out there, but freight would kill it....
All,
Given my grill is sorta 54 Ford (actually 54 Fordiac) it'll fit 53-56 and given my sterring column is yet to be decided (ah the flexibility of dak-siding), looks like 53-56 will all work.

I like that grille!! that is excellent. The LEDs are great
Yeah the dark side does have some advantages. Eventually I'll be installing a guage cluster from a 58 Pontiac in my F1 (once my metal forming skills catch up with my dreams)

Thanks. It was a lot of fun building it. Coulda bought a really nice chrome one for the money I put into it, but I'm very happy with it......
All,
Bought the cab today. It's a 53/54/55. Only needs the panel in the front driver's side corner and he included a new patch panel for that spot. Cab is covered with surface rust, but not one hole except the spot mentioned. Doors are good and no bondo.... No extra holes drilled in her either....
Been a busy weekend. 5 hour round trip to view and buy the cab. Couldn'
t bring it home cause my transportation for it backed out, but we'll get her in a few weeks.... Also did a 2 hr round trip with my youngest boy - Rory to pick up his FIRST CAR - a 78 El Camino. Ain't a Ford truck, but baby steps, baby steps......
Thanks,
