Well, I had a fuel filter light come on and the motor was jerking and surging. I changed the fuel filter and it is still doing the same thing. It hasn't been long since I had changed the filter, like 6 months. Any ideas on this. Is there another filter somewhere between the tank and the low pressure fuel pump? Could it be a line? If it is it is affecting both tanks .. Help .. ??
When my trucks filter light came on my truck would surge and occasionally die like yours sounds like. I too first changed the filter with no change. Turned out the mechanical lift pump went bad so it was just basically siphoning the fuel from the tanks to run. Replaced the pump and fixed everything. Do a fuel flow check at the shrader valve and make sure you're getting enough fuel to the filter with just cranking the engine. If no fuel probably mechanical pump but make sure your lines aren't clogged with something as well.
Light goes out if under like 1500 rpm. At idle it is out. Light did not go out at road speed with the new filter. I think Goodie350 may be on the right track. Before when the fuel level got low it would surge but the light never came on. In the past I could run a tank nearly empty and it would never surge. I think it may be the fuel pump. I have an electric on inline but it has froze up I guess. Has power to it but doesn't work.
Thanks to y'all ..
I was able to nurse mine along for a week until I could replace the pump. At idle the light would go out and on acceleration it would flicker or come on and surge every now and then. So long as I didn't jump on the pedal it would limp along. I did run it out once and it was a real pain to get started again.
If you are running a manual lift and an electric( which is froze up) there is a/the restriction. Never run both connected at the same time. If you run an electric remove the manual lift pump and put a Chebby big block blockoff plate on the hole..cheap at Azone.
Electric pump has been on there and froze up for probably 8 - 9 years. Hasn't affected it so far. I do need to do something with it anyway. I don't see why one can't have both. Airplanes have both and the electric is used only for starting and in case the engine driven one fails. I basically put it on in case I ran a tank dry or when I changed the filter so I could prime the filter without grinding the engine. Had the same set up on my gas pickup and it never failed and it only ran when I needed it via a switch.
Well found the problem!! PLC7.3 was right. I replaced the fuel pump and had the same thing. I was thinking crud in the tank but was thinking that how could it be both tanks at the same time unless it was just a bad batch of fuel. Was contemplating taking the bed off to access the tanks, figured that would be easier than taking the tanks down with the skid plates etc. But there was two things between the tanks and the pump. One being that inoperative electric fuel pump. Figured I'd start there. I removed it and replaced it with a piece of hose and "Viola" .. !! Problem gone. I guess it had just been there so long that it finally built up enough restriction to cause the problem. So it's fixed and thanks to all of you that responded. This forum is great .. !!
