This started about 7mounths ago When I start my f-250 7.3 banks turbo 4x4 truck I have a rough idle and smoke coming from the tail pipe I can smell a heavy deisel odor It seams to run fine going down the road but I have noticed a 2to3 mile drop in fuel milage around town and about 1 mile on the hwy. I want to add that the rough start up and smoke does not happen all the time but it is more often than not. your input and thoughts would be appreciated.
first guess would be an injector issue, like one is failing and releasing pressure too easily, be it leaking or early release. Might be time for a set of new or rebuilt injectors. It's best to replace them in a set, besides, if one is bad, how much longer would it be before another fails? (Been having this discussion with my father, as yet to get him to listen... his truck just died so maybe I can get the point across... he has been having idle and smoke issues as well, and a couple of the injectors have been tested and were failed... now it won't idle at all.)
ski ... you could short out the injectors, one at a time, to determine which is bad and that would also help you determine if it is an injector. with the engine off, loosen all the cap nuts on the fuel lines on each injector, retighten each one, just snug. After starting the engine, go around and loosen each one, one at a time. the one that makes no difference in idle is the culprit. give each one time to get its breath back before moving to the next one. BE CAREFUL AROUND MOVING PARTS !!!!!!!!!
Well I got new injectors off ebay and installed them this weekend. I had two injectors leaking and a couple where gummed up. It took me about 5 hours to do the job. The truck runs great. I think I might have some air in the lines its just little rough on start up but then smooths right up. Thank for the help

thanks for letting us know how it went! If you still have the return line from the injectors to the filter housing, disconnect it and plug it off on both ends. There is a check valve on the filter housing that fails and can contribute to your symptoms.
You won't... but they tend to fail, and the recommended repair is to just plug it off. On mine, it got to where every time I started it, it would start for 30 seconds, then die, then I had to crank and crank, like it was out of fuel. It was, basically, because it had drained off the filter. To save some trouble, just plug it off before it fails if nothing more. Also, check the return lines for any leaks, if you have any air getting in at all, it will airlock the injection system, a little air will still let it run, but it will run rough.
