Has anyone out there had their valve cam sensor changed to eliminate valve tap after engine warms up.If so is there a new sensor out there? My dealer says the part number has not changed but I read some where that ford has made a modified sensor to correct this problem.Had mine changed once and the problem is still there.Sounds like a diesel at idle after warm up.It goes in to the dealer next Thursday for another sensor. Other than that and a parking brake probem that caused vibration it runs well and delivers between 14 and 18 miles per gallon. Not bad for a 5.4 four wheel drive.
I have been wondering about a redesigned (?) cam sensor also. There was a post about a month or so ago about this. I replied to the thread, but got no answer. If anyone has any additional info please post it up or PM us.
I want to have as much info as possible before I go to the dealership to have mine fixed.
Mine does the same thing, only when warmed. Had it in at Ford and they said it is normal. I will be taking it to another dealership for a second opinion. Next time I'll test drive another one off the lot and see if it makes the noise..
Do a search on this "valve tapping"? in the search bar above and you will find more on this subject..
Fordman 1967 it isn't actual valve tap. The cam phase sensor is the culprit. I believe the cam itself can be affected at some point. My dealership also said it is a normal sound of the new 5.4 (heads). It is not a normal sound. You have it or you don't. The noise on mine started at about 1,000 miles (I have 11,000 miles on it now). I have had people tell me "Do you have a bad valve or rod or something" when it is idling. It definitely is very noticeable. There is also a TSB pertaining to this problem. ???? Will this problem show up on the diagnostic computer when a reflash is performed? (I was going to get one because of a slight surging problem and bad mileage) From some other posts it seems so.
I will get mine replaced at some point. I just want to know if the part has been redesigned or not. I would care to say that 50% of those that have had them replaced (from reports on this site), have had the problem reoccur.
If anyone has any new information please post up new(? ) part#'s or experiences with fixing this problem. Thanks in advance :P
FS-150, just had the truck in on Tuesday for a PCM reflash..They didn't mention anything about any error codes showing up, (of course they wouldn't even if one did) I never asked. I think it idles better now, but the verdict is still out on performance. I will have to listen to see if the noise is still there.
I know it's not actual a valve tapping but that was what the origional post was labelled ("valve tapping"?). They talk about cam phasors etc.. Just thought you may be interested in it..
Gonna take it in for a second opinion.. They may say it's normal but it doesn't sound that way to me.. I sounds like a quiet diesel...

Thanks for the reply Fordman1967. How many miles do you have on yours, and at what point did the cam phase sensors start making noise?
Keep the replies coming guys...

Noticed it at about 4500 miles, took it in shortly after that. I now have about 6200 miles on it.
You are doing it right. get as much info and written stuff as you can as a lot of service departments like to say "that's normal" to a lot of stuff..
Ive been watching these threads and didnt notice anybody saying that theres does it SOME times knot all the time ANYBODY mine does it some times like after I use the OD button then it seams to smooth out

My truck makes the noise only after the oil warms up and thins out. When the outside tempertures are warm this does not take long. Is this what you are experiencing also? It sounds like you may have some different problem. My cam phase sensor noise can only be heard at idle (up to about 1,000 RPM). As stated before it sounds like a diesel "knock".

This has been covered in many topics before. The noise is due to the lash adjusters. The 5.4L-3V has normaly open lash adjusters. This is the dieseling sound you here under 1,00RPM's. There is no fix for it, and does not have any effect on engine life or the Cam Phaser.
Think of it as having hydraulic vs. solid lifters in your old windsor engines.

So what you are saying is some trucks have a lash adjuster problem, and some do not??? The noise I hear from my truck is not a normal noise. And yes, I have compared it to other new 5.4's. Also, my truck did not make the sound for the first 1,000 miles.
Had the new and improved valve cam installed yesterday. Can't believe the difference .At idle after warm up it is quiet.Hope my gas milage does not change last trip 400mi. averaged almost 19 m.p.g.at 68m.p.h. 1800 rpm.
