you can run any setting you want on any tuner or chip you want... but you HAVE TO HAVE GUAGES TO WATCH THE TEMPS...! no gauges.... no way... even playing a little can cost you a motor...
im trying to spend as little as possible.. so would the egt gauge be sufficient, or would i need the trans temp as well. also, would a new exhaust system be necessary?

You only need the EGT guage; the boost guage is interesting but not essential, and you have a 6 spd manual, so no tranny guage is needed. Be sure the EGT sensor is installed upstream of the turbo. Watch it and limit the temperature to 1250 F. This will work for anything you use the truck for; empty, towing, etc..
You should install the kwik filter (the NAPA 6637 filter). This is a cheap upgrade, will add a little power or mileage, and will protect the engine from dusting due to the poor fit on the original filter box. For the best price on the filter email to (Click Here to find out why email addresses are removed from posts.) and ask for a 46637 filter (the original wix number for the NAPA filter). They will have to order it; it is not on their shelf. The filter costs $18.70 plus shipping.
I sent you a private message with the email address to order the Wix filter.
Happy trucking

I ran my stock truck with the stock exhaust on the 60Hp setting without ill effect.
Millions of others do it day in day out too.
Should you? Well that's up to you.
As far as the pre-vs post deal, they both tell the same thing, but it's just a matter of adjusting scales.
I can add, so I don't lose any sleep about my pyro being post turbo (even if I unintentionally installed it there), and plus I don't have to worry about the freak possiblity of the probe breaking off and taking out my turbo.
900-1050 is considered max for a post turbo sensor, with 1250-1350 max on the pre turbo side.
I'm currently working on setting up a pre and post setup using the same guage and a switch. Don't know for sure how well it will work as the pyro leads are tuned for their length (like a radio antenna), but it should be interesting.

The Hypertech actually say's you don't need a EGT gauge with thier tuner, of course it's still YOUR engine and money! I use the Hypertech and it makes my truck run cooler and yes it's stock. But I only run it on the first 30hp setting..my .02
egt is a must... whatever you are doing... tranny temp is only needed for auto trannys if you are towing or carrying a large load in the heat.... boost guage is nice because it's cool to look at and it impresses your friends..! it will also let you know if you are not getting the boost you should which could clue you in to a small problem before it turns into a big one...

Gauges, gauges, gauges, for ANY added power. Sure you can run a lower setting with no Pyro gauge, and dont have any problems NOW, but you are unknowingly stressing out parts and cutting down on there life span with the excessive heat that you can not regulate without a EGT gauge.
Johnny is right on the Boost gauge, its great for wasting fuel just so you can see it move around
They said it a couple of times already and I'll say it again. You definitely need an EGT gauge. I toyed with my tuner prior to installing my gauges and once I finally got the gauges in, I couldn't believe just how fast the EGT's rise. Climbing hills, pulling trailers, rompin on it off the line..... they all build temps quick. When doing highway driving, I've learned to use my EGT and Boost gauges to my advantage when trying to maximize fuel economy. It makes a huge difference. You're gonna love your tuner. I couldn't believe the difference the 60hp setting made. Night and day is an understatement. Good luck!
