Im looking at buying a used 2000-2002 explorer since those are in my price range. My 94 explorer with 182,000 miles on it is chewing up its second transmission.
Any suggestions on these year explorers. Transmission problems? Some of the ones i am looking at have around 70-80,000 miles on them and i would rather not drive it a year and need to get a new tranny. Any other comments or suggestions would be great.
I have a 2002 XLT 4X4. The transmission was replaced at 52,000 miles. The transmissions are notorious for shifting problems that are attributed to a defective solenoid, resulting in internal damage. Also, these vehicles are known to have problems with stress cracks in the hatch door part of the lift gate. Unless your vehicle is still under warranty, Ford will charge you to fix the problems. Do a search on this forum on transmissons and also stress cracks. As a long time Ford enthusiast, I am not at all happy with the Explorer. My '85 F150 will probably outlast my Explorer. No more Ford Explorers for me! Needless to say, I think you should stay away from the Explorer.
IMHO, I'd opt for the newer generation Explorers (2002 to current). The big thing for these are ride, due to the added IRS. I've heard great things about the 4.6L V8. My 01 just seems to be 'dated'. ALSO, the newer generation's are a bit wider and add more cargo room. Some of these can be had for some great prices and most might be coming off leases or demo's. Good luck in your decision. For grins, check ebay and compare models and prices that way, also checking Edmunds and Kelly Blue Book won't hurt either..
well I was in the market a couple weeks ago drove 20 diffent vehicles... my comparsions between the 00 01 vrs 02
ride was equal turning raduis is sharp on these thing is awsome!!!
bad thing
XLS is option is like standard xlt(95-01)NO 3rd row
XLT has more option than a 01 xlt but 3rd row is optional not all xlt has 3rd row
also the "reciver hitch" xls has a small one class 2 inch ?
some xlt have the class 3 hitch but if it don't have a hitch you have to buy one no place for a ball (like the 91-01)
here was the big dislike I had if you want 3rd with rear air(overhead unit) you cannot have a moon roof
I drive 3 4.6 and I belive the 5.0 would kick its butt
but the same thing the V-8's all have control trac no true 2wd mode in a 4x4 model explorer..
I ended up with a 00 e.b. with all the options
right now you can probably get a better deal on a 00-01 bodystyle than the 02 becarefull on the 4.6 plug wires $50 a peice at autozone they go down a 3 inch hole on the intake costly to do a tune up
