new guy help...

I'm new to the Ford truck world, and I would appreciate some help from experienced Ford fans. I'm trying to decide between an Explorer and an Expedition. Main concern is towing! My boat (and trailer) will be approx. 5200 -6200 lbs, but I want extra "room" just in case. Diferent sites rate these vehicles towing capability at way different numbers all the time. What's the real deal?
I want the 8 cyl engine in either one, and I'm thinking 2000-2002 for both. I'd love to hear your thoughts, what to look for when buying used, and what to stay away from. (hint: I'm leaning towards an Expedition) Thank you all in advance.

Consider a 5.4L Expy over the 4.6L. The 4.6L is underpowered, I know I have one.

The fuel economy difference between the two vehicles in question is pretty small. The Expedition can definitely handle the weight better than the 1,000 pound lighter Explorer, and has a wider track than the Explorer, making it a more stable platform.

I had a 1996 Explorer with the 5.0l and AWD and it could barely tow another car on a car dolly. The engine could handle it, but the lighter weight of the Explorer made it real squirly at anything over about 50 mph. Go with the Expedition, bigger, stronger, more stable towing platform. Gas mileage is a push if you plan on getting a V-8 either way.

I've owned 3 Explorers, 91, 95 & 99 models. Picked up a used 97 4x4 Expedition a few years ago, Best vehicle I've every owned. I would easily choose a Expedition over a Explorer having owned both. Although I loved my Explorers, they did not tow very well (2000 lb pop up camper) and I felt they were pretty gutless on the highway. My Expedition "Hauls Butt" and I don't even know I have the camper behind me.
