When I put my truck in reverse, it has one jolt at first. I was told that it was the u-joints. Which is wrong, because It did it before I replaced both. What is this? Its done it since day-1. It doesnt do it in a forward gear. Is it maybe the limited-slip acting or rear gears? The truck is a 302 with E4od.
PLACE YOUR TRUCK ON LEVEL GROUND AND PUT IT IN NEUTRAL. GO UNDER AND SPIN THE DRIVE SHAFT BACK AND FORTH. YOU MIGHT GET THAT NOISE IN YOUR REAR GEARS. THEY CALL THAT A RING AND PINION SLAP. IF SO HAVE YOUR REAR GEARS CHECKED BY SOMEONE REPUTABLE OF COURSE. CAN BE QUITE EXPENSIVE! I KNOW FROM PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES!$500.00
Okay, thanks for the info Jim. I have the factory Limited slip, and I thought that it may have something to do with the knock. But to be on the safe side I will check it out.
Ya, check for slop in the rear....but it may not be on the inside so much....check the nut that holds the pinion gear and the yoke in place. Drop the driveshaft at the rear. There will be a dustshield that you can pry off with a chisel or screwdriver. You'll be able to access that nut then....I'm sure there is a torque spec on it somewhere...don't have a book that covers that year...Mine had come loose somehow and was making a terrible racket....it would make the noise you describe, plus, while driving down the road at highway speed it would make a roaring noise....I searched and searched, finally found the problem....everything quieted down then. Hope this helps ya out.
