Anyone have experience in replacing a rear coil spring in an 02 Explorer 4dr?
Just replaced brakes and noticed spring cracked in second coil from the top. Looks like whole strut assembly should come out once 2 top bolts and large bottom bolt are removed but it could be tricky if the lower control arm will not drop enough.
02 to 05 Explorers and 03 to 05 Expeditions have independent rear suspensions with upper and lower control arms and coil over shock units - quite functional actually
I looked at a newer one this afternoon after my previous post and saw that they did indeed go that route. Good move in my opinion. The rear leaf system on the older Explorers, especially the 2-doors was inadequate. Did they do something about the torison bar front suspension??
I think your right on lower control arm. Need to remove pinch-bolt to wheel hub. Don't forget to disconnect any thing bolted to control arm (e-brake cable, abs wire, etc.)
Also, I think there should be 3 nuts on top.
