Guages Mounting spots ?

Just wanted to know where everyone mounts thier guages? I have the typical three guage under the dash but how are you expected to see it? I want to know if my oil pressure drops while I'm driving before it's too late.
I would really like to mount the important ones on the "A" pillar. If anyone has these with pic's let me know. Thanks Rob

I considered all mounting possibilities with-in reason when mounting mine. I was originally going to mount them atop the dash but realized running wiring and tubing to them would be more difficult and hole drilling than it was worth.

Then I thought about the A-pillar. I mounted a decent sized tach in my '65 Coronet in the top corner of the a-pillar and it was suprizingly intrusive when driving, so I scratched that off.

Above the visor was a real possibility, plenty of room and could run the wires above the headliner and down inside the a-pillar, again more hassle and with me being 6' it would be a little annoying to have the visor half down all the time.

SO! I opted for the ol' steering column. It's really hard to beat this spot, easy to view, non-intrusive and easy to mount and wire. No body parts are drilled into to mount and it still looks very sharp.

I built my own gage pod on top of the dash, holds a 3 3/8 tach, 2 5/8 vac gage, 2 1/8 oil press and water temp. All of them are in easy sight and none block any outward view over the hood. The gages were all electrical, and the wires just run through the unused speaker vent. If you were afraid of doing this, the dash pad could be removed and wires routed through a hole under there. I will try to post some pics in my gallery tomorrow afternoon, too late tonight.

jstandle, that looks pretty nice. I also noticed you have a 100mph speedometer, was that from the factory or did you find that somewhere and put it in?

Thanks! The speedo is factory. Not sure what option added it though. It's a 2wd '73 F250 Camper Special Ranger.

I just finished mounting mine on top of the dash. I had to punch a hole just in front of the vent duct and went through the existing firewall hole.

The guages were mechanical but I put extra tubing over the tubes for protection.

I will have to manufacture some kind of cover for the back of them. It was probably a harder install but the main thing is I don't have to take my eyes of the road for so long to check them.

The whole thing for all three guages took me about 4 hrs.

That "take your eyes off the road" business is why I wire a red idiot light also.

Yeah an Idiot light helps but........can someone please tell me why they don't put an audible alarm on oil pess. water temp and for that matter the turn signals? I mean come on it warns me if I haven't fastened the seat belt. Even an idiot light can be missed but a loud buzzing gets noticed.

You could wire up a sonalert but you might have to shange your shorts every time it goes off...

Use the standard switch type sensors that drive the regular idiot lights. You can get all kinds of them for many different applications. Run a + power lead to a red light and then run a lead from the light to all of the switches. If anything goes wrong it turns on the light and reminds you to check the gauges. If you have an idiot light dash already you don't need one you just need to make sure the lights work. If you have a gauge cluster you can add in a light.

In a '67 Dart I had I used a semi-truck air pressure buzzer for the oil pressure alarm. I also used a red dash light, wired them both to the same sender and it worked great. I believe the sender just grounded the light and buzzer to make them go off.

You can buy one wire senders that will ground out the light or buzzer and you can also get 2-wire senders that make or even break the circuit when a certain condition is reached. The parts stores have catalogs that show a large variety of parts available. Of course you will never find the precise one you want...
