I am replacing my timing chain in a 1999 5.4 ohv and need some help getting it lined up properly. can someone tell me what marks to use and what position to put them in. any help would be greatly appreciated.
well, i havent done a timing chain in this engine yet, but everyone i have ever done is very simple.... the gears usually will slide onto the crank, and camshafts with a woodruff key, so they only go one way. then, the gears themselves should have the line-up marks punched in them. just make sure they are right next to each other when its all installed with the chain on. sometimes you will have to take it on/off a couple times until you get the chain in the right spot on the gears.... just try one tooth over at a time, and it should go right on for ya !! good luck !!
Unfortunately these engine dont have timing marks like an older engine.
Unless you marked everything extremely well before you pulled it apart I wouldn't tackle this job without a good shop manual and the special tools that the manual specifies.
Maybe a local parts store or someone at a dealership could be talked into lending them to you
redneck1969 - when I put PI heads on my truck, I got the majority of my headswap info from ModularDepot.com. They have a couple of Tech articles posted on cam timing along with dozens of posts on the subject.
There are some great photos of what marks to use. Take a look at those and then take your time and you should do OK. It seems a little overwhelming at first, but if you think it through, it isn't bad.
