At the opposite ends of each timing chain is a discolored link (usually copper). These discolored links go adjacent to the the timing mark on each sprocket.

okay yes there is 3 discolored links one alone the other two together.
which side of the chain goes on the head?
And is there a special tool to help you hold the chain in place.

on a 5.4L/6.8L, the single marked link lines up wit the crankshaft sprocket's mark. The 2 links that are side-by-side is where the camshaft sprocket timing mark lines up in the center of the two links.
