as soon as i hit key on my 86 f150 351w i lose all power, then itake off the battery cable&put it back on my power comes back.i hit key again same thing.my starter ,solenoid, ignition switch are all good.i was told bad ground&thats what i am leaning toward.some help would great!
dmac,
It does sound like you have a bad connection somewhere - either on the cables, starter, or solenoid. Maybe even the battery has failed inside somehow. What happens when this happens and you try to boost it? Ever tried that?
Will the power stay on when you jump the truck with another one? If not you may need to try a load test on the battery. The battery may show 12 volts but there could be a short between two cells. When you load test the battery it must be fully charged (12.6V) and when you apply the load (half the cold cranking amps) for 15 seconds the voltage sould not drop below 9.6V.
What f150hotrod said is true. After you do this test, if the battery drops below 9 volts the battery is bad. If it stays above 9 volts, assuming all the wiring is good, its probably the starter.
Hook up a battery jumper cable from battery negative post directly to engine block. If that doesn't help try directly to frame, Not that, try to cab. If its a ground problem one of those steps ought to identify about where it is. Surely you're not using any of those el-cheapo bolt-on replacement battery cable terminals which are almost guaranteed to fail in a few months.
when i turn the key the solinoid makes 1 click&all power goes out.battery, starter, alt &
solinoid check out good.i cant find any body to frame ground straps, only neg cable to engine ground&neg battery to body ground wire.
My 86 has ground wire at back of engine screwed into firewall. Get someone to help you. Since you are losing all power, it will usually be a short to be heard. Have someone turn ignition switch and while you are under the hood listen for a click sound. If its dark, its even better. If the battery ground to engine hooks up a the Alt. bracket, look for the problem there. Just take it loose and make sure it getting good contact. I've had the problem more times than one there.
