BigF350, I've got a buddy heading down your way to check out some of the indiginous rock art. (he's into that kind of stuff). Anyway, I'll have to warn him about that reverse swirl. Knowing him, he'll drink too many beers and get dizzy watching the kids swim away.

Yes, am sure!

I have seen a similar issue on Explorers (which run a similar fuel measurement system to the Super Duties), where the fuel sender does not reset properly, and it is a delayed reaction.
However, that would fault everytime you filled up.
Aha...well, it has done it two straight fill-ups in a row so maybe we are on to something. I hit the road in the next number of hours so will keep you posted as I have something to report and as I might hit on some internet service to report it on. Lots of fill-ups ahead in next two weeks. LOL. Appreciate your thoughts.

olfordsnstone, thanks for your input...might be something there.

Mud Doc...the moonroof is doing well and not leaking! Thanks for asking.

Oh, captchas, dealer didn't have diesel tech available in time w/me leaving so I did not get to take it in again but we had a lengthy conversation and they came up with an idea that I may have to use at another dealership on the road...which is: If this happens even one or two more times, especially in a row...then it goes to working normal by the time the dealership sees it...so they say that they (or other dealer) should try filling it up THERE to test what it does. Sounds like a grand idea.

Ha! Methinks they'll view that as a chargeable item.

Either way, from the symptoms you have quoted I am 99% confident that it is something to do with the way that the fuel gauge resets.
Whether it is the fuel sender card, or the Instrument Cluster I could not confirm, but the former is looking like a high posibility.

Well, here is an update on this problem.

I've been on the road for two and a half weeks with a scary number of fill-ups...sky-high prices on diesel in some parts of the country, BTW.

When my truck bed has no weight in it I have the problem EVERY TIME I fill up.

When my truck bed has weight in it, which is usually a minimum of 1,000 pounds...there is no problem at all.

??????

Interesting observation.
I am still of the belief it is a problem with the fuel sender, and it resetting.
My guess at what is causing the symptoms you see with it loaded/unloaded is the angle of the truck, and therefore the fuel in the tank, and whether it is resetting the fuel sender.
Does it do the same thing going up/down a hill?

Not sure what you mean, but I always fill up when the truck is as level as possible. As far as whether or not the fuel gauge is affected while I am driving up or down big hills or mountains, the answer is no, not to anything noticeable.

I think what BigF350 was referring to regarding the angle was, when weight is in the bed, the truck would sit a little more level and maybe that is what is needed for YOUR sending unit to read correctly. Assuming that your sending unit (in the tank) is what is malfunctioning, it may read more correctly when level. I know that when my F350 is unladen, it sit's kinda like a stink bug. You know, up in the rear, so the weight (1000lbs+) would sag it down more to level.
At least that is what I think he meant. If that is correct, then the sending unit might be what is in need of replacement.
BigF350, is this what you meant???

Labgal-
Weird. I fill up my truck with the engine running every time...and I never have a problem. I usually just let the nozzle click off when it's done, but every now and then I pump in a couple more gallons. Definitely doesn't sound like a "normal" quirk of the fuel system. Probably just the sender as mentioned above...Did you ever get a dealership to fill up your tank for you?

One other question no one else asked...you mentioned you filled up a truck stop...those nozzles pump FAST! I fill up at regular stations with smaller sized nozzles. Is there any chance that the fuel is really foamed up cause it's pouring in so fast and messing with the sender?

BTW, maybe you could stop by my house while you're out traveling the country and help me train my recently adopted 10 mo old yellow! He's a big, slobbering, water loving crazy brute!

Well. I am about out of theoretical guesses
I would suggest (and I hate to do this to you), but it seems like it may need to be taken to the dealership.
Tell them what you have found, and hopefully they can diagnose it.

Good luck

You could undo the battery cables and let it reset it self that way. I’ve done this and all the gauges sweep across during the first initial start-up. It seems the gauge is measuring something from what I’ve read so maybe it’s working properly, and as others have stated it is in the sending unit.
