Heard from the dealership and they cannot find anything except the trouble code itself, which they did find, regarding the fuel system data error. They are not doing anything right now except wait, watch and see and I go to pick up my truck shortly.
I had asked them not to flash my truck without us talking and they said a flash was not called for anyway.
It happened again, on this very next tank fuel-up. No, the truck was not on. Not either time. It was off. The key was out of the ignition. AGAIN...and I did not touch any reset buttons before hand.....
Fueled up, getting ready to pull out for next road trip....almost on empty this time...got in, started truck, pulled off....truck gauge still on empty, info says LOW FUEL and info miles to empty kept going DOWN. After about an hour the gauge goes up, the info center goes up.
This is not normal. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When you filled it up, I am guessing (and this is merely a guess), that you didn't fill it up completely to the top.
The fuel senders signal is controlled by the instrument cluster I think, but thats not the point.
If the tank is filled right up, the gauge will reset, however if you only fill up half way (or very close to full) it will not reset, and the module will delay the signal by 45 mins, so if you are climbing a hill it will not show empty etc. It will gradually adjust to what the signal tells it.
It does this even when the key is in the off posistion. As for the reason why the message center read what it did, I believe it may have been because it thought there was no fuel in the tank, it resets itself though.
I don't think you have a problem, I would still get it checked out for your peace of mind however.
Labgal, I reluctantly relay what I was told by a diesel mechanic at Ford. I asked about the fuel tank harpoon I have read about on FTE (sounds like a great idea by the way). He thought it might not be a good idea as filling all the way up might screw up the electronics of the sending unit. Well, I still do fill my tank all the way to the top of the fill neck as I hate stopping for fuel. However, maybe he is correct and the sending system has failed. I would like to know if this is valad so post the results when the dealership is done doing their thing. If they do that is.
Is it true when you flush the toilet the water swirls clockwise? Point being, you may not be quailified to answer such questions.
a bad part is he is more so then any one of us. and he has not worked for ford. he is though a automotive enginer working on his masters in automotive enginering and fully understands the electrical part of our cars and trucks . if bigf350 offers advise you can take it to the bank 99.9% of the time
any more flaming of any one i will lock this thread

My truck is an '04 and the same thing has happened twice--can't say what triggered it, but the fuel gauge (tank was full) was at 1/3, then went to below empty. Turning the ignition off several times didn't cure it. Just kept on going, somewhere along the way I looked down and it showed full. Another Ford Quirk????????????????
lab girl
take it back fast. can't post what i think.
Capt, could you please e-mail me what you think? You've got me really curious.
ps. If you do, I wont get it until tomorrow as I do not have access to my e-mail.
thanks, Tim

Yes the water swirls clockwise...
And I am not going to respond to the 2nd part if thats ok with you
Anyhow if you are sure you filled it to the brim, it could be something else.
I have seen a similar issue on Explorers (which run a similar fuel measurement system to the Super Duties), where the fuel sender does not reset properly, and it is a delayed reaction.
However, that would fault everytime you filled up.
Beyond that I can't really help without being there.
Sorry.
