Hello to everyone.. New here and happy to see all the info.
Second I am not new to forums so I did search but maybe not well enough.
Now the question.
What is the towing capacity of the 79 F-150 4X4 ?
wife bought a new camper (first camper) and it's 29' and loaded close to 7500LBS. tounge wight is 650 lbs.
I would look for a sticker on the truck but everyting has been repained over so most things i cant read other than the VIN Number.
I know the truck has low gears and the tranny is low as well 4 speed, i think it could slowly pull a houe over if i needed to or drag the camper thu the mud but i am more worried about driving highway with her.
any help you guys could lend would be much appreciated.
isent the 1/2ton rated 7700 pounds? i know thats what the newer 1/2 tons are. i tow my 21 foot toy hauler and it has a 625 tonuge weight and about 7000 fully loaded no problems here. when i hook it up my 77 dosent squat more then 1/2 inch
might want to be careful with the 6cyl but i dont have any experance with them.. be slow going up hills

I have a 302 to drop in her in the future with flat top pistons and a mid range cam. Pulled it from my race car and saved her for the truck. Jus thave to get the time to swap her out.
Mil1ion where do I get one of those special manuals ??
I don't want to hijack the thread.... but I guess I will anyway. Mil1ion, I have a 78 F150 4x4 with a 351M and I pull my 23' travel trailer that weighs about the same as yours. I have no problems starting or stopping and can pull on the highway at 65-70 without slowing down much up hill. Is there that much difference in the 78 vs 79 or am I way over spec?
If your going to be hauling then I would reccomend keeping that 300 six It will totally trounce the 302 in brute torque, reliability and hauling capacity and is much better suited to that kind of thing. Thats just my opinion however many here would agree with me
I agree with sailorpsycho, the I6 300 will have way more torque than your 302. If you moved to a 351 400 or a 460 then take out the 300, but other wise keep it in there. You just won't be able to go that fast, not that much top end hp.
You should be able to tow that, but it will be alittle hard on your rig.
I'm sticking to the 300 and going to pull her out and give her a good over haul. I have already put alot of money into the truck, I have rebuilt the entire front end and all the steering components. I just need to get a new steering box for less than 400.00 and it will be good. starting to work on the body of it now.
Will be a few more years but will be good as new I have plans to redo the cab this summer new floors and corners. But all is reall yon hold until after the wedding thing in July.
I did tow the travel trailer home from the place I bought it and it did Ok. Mind you I had turn lights and runnig and maybe brake lights but I am not sure if I have elec brakes on the trailer or not and if so they were not hooked up. truck squatted about 1 1/2 inches under the tounge weight of 650.00 but that was about it it drove fairly good but hard to tell as huge storm was rolling in and i was caught in the wind.
I'm not going to be pulling the trailer more than 30 miles and most of that is under 40 MPH. and only every other weekend for the most part.
A bit of TLC and the truck should be good !!
Thanks Guys,
Dave
BTW. I'll still be here for awhile cuz I don't plan on getting rid of the truck. !
